Its too cold for bike frames!

http://www.bikepacking.net/forum/index.php/topic,589.0.html

Here's an interesting thread about Specialized going after Epic Designs, all one of him, for using the word *Epic*.

I once got an autobot warning email because I used the word *spin* or *spinning* on a bike list discussion. It said the word is a trademark and I can't use it. Several other people got it too. That was too funny!

I do think trademarking words like spin or epic is absurd and I think a lot less of Specialized for this.

Correct me if I am wrong, but if you order a "frame only" the chainstay comes with it, correct? I would be interested in knowing how they define the part. If not part of the frame, is it part of the suspension as Luke suggests? Considered a "consumable" such as the tires and brake pads? Just curious.

I hear you, I tried many of these with the rep. He agreed. He said "I know, its BS, but thats the policy, nothing I can do about it" For my part, I guess the fact that it didnt cost me much to fix took some of the fight out of me. If this part was $500, I probably would have blown the phone up.

1. Burned out inner o-ring on Delta shower faucet assembly while admittedly soldering a joint without removing the assembly. Result: Delta sent a new assembly the same day. A week later, I returned all the other fixtures not yet installed and replaced them with Delta products.

2. Basically blew apart a Tasco red-dot scope using .357 rounds handloaded with steroids. Called for replacement lens that was 2 years out of warranty. Result, Tasco apologized that the lens broke after being abused by very hot ammo and sent me a new unit with all updated accessories. I now have several Tasco scopes and binoculars.

I have had many of these incidents also. Tons with my dirtbike. Renthal has to date sent me 3 brand new sets of handlebars after crashed and bending 2 sets. Fox sent me a whole new chest protector after a guy landed on me and tore one of the straps off of it. I called them just looking for a new strap, they sent me a whole new chest protector. Certainly influenced my future purchases.

Utah, in that picture where the two broken pieces are held together what is that missing chunk? Is that a piece that broke off and you did not recover or was their some detail such as a hole of some type. That is one weird failure if it's a missing chunk, maybe contamination or porosity in the casting. If it was a clearance or drainage hole then it didn't look to be properly done, tons of stress concentrations there.

Maybe it's those big ass 29er wheels.....:hmmm:

Pat, I noticed that too. What i think happened is that this part broke twice. Im pretty sure the lower half cracked on the privious ride. Which would explain why I could not get the tire to stop rubbing on the derail. cable. Then the next ride it finally snapped all the way though. I looked at the parts pretty closely and I dont see any obvious porosity. One of my good friends works for a very prominent casting plant around here. He wants me to give him the pieces so he can have the inspection department check them out..just for fun. If that actually happens, ill be intrested to see what they say

That double break scenario seems to make sense. It would be cool to see what a thorough FMA determines. It's amazing what can be determined by looking at things at a microscopic level. Keep us posted.
