Is it a fad, a group or a club? It's OOS, the thread to rule them all!

FWIW I liked the idea someone posted about posting a schedule of locations rather than lead riders. If you used 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th week of each month, the calandar can be set in perpetuity. Then, people who are going to make the ride can volunteer to lead. If it's a really large group, you could split based on ability. This would take a lot of admin work out of the group. Chances are if 2 people want to lead, they take similar routes any way and can talk through when there and determine which they want to take. Could post all rides to strava a month at a time and rotate amongst whomever the month they have to post up. Hell, I'll just take on that responsability if you guys want. Just need your help learning how to do it. Lol.

I usually don’t come in the OoS area but why would you have a group ride, with a specific sub forum, and then not allow anyone who wanted to, join in?

Also, @fidodie mentions that someone can’t coordinate another OoS ride on the same day. That seems like the perfect way to not grow the OoS movement.

Also, obviously there needs to be a locked ride thread that only the people coordinating can edit because every thread that OoS people starts seems to turn into a shit show. Just saying.
Please join us for a ride sometime. NJ (especially up north) has some great mountain biking trails.

I agree with all of this. I find it really hard to follow the OOS threads. Because of that I stopped checking in on them and, therefore, miss the rides information. I'd love to join you guys on occasion and I can even lead or sweep if you come down to Hartshorne/Huber. You definitely need a locked thread for rides only so the information isn't lost in the white noise. Keep your other threads for the shit talking.

I like what you are doing. I've only been mountain biking for a couple years and I can relate to how it can be intimidating to join a group ride. No one wants to be the only guy that's walking a tech section or holding up the group. The casual/no drop approach is very inviting. That said if you limit the rides that whole dynamic is lost which goes against the whole premise of OOS.

@stb222 no one is being excluded unless someone is a complete jerk off and disrespects a fellow rider or trail user. We are trying to figure out a ride scheduling format from posting rides to who everyone will follow on a ride.

I am going to ask a few people if they are willing to be an admin on strava and I'm also accepting volunteers if we have a way to know who edited what in strava to maintain a level of control.

I admit I have missed a few posts and read back a little bit after my last post.

Seriously, what brought this all about? Riding bikes is supposed to be fun. I don't see why every ride needs to be an official sanctioned gathering with ride leaders, sweepers, etc. I can see how that is a lot of work and why not many have the time to do it.

It happens on the forum all the time that someone will post up, "Riding park X at time Y. Casual pace. Meet me in loz Z if you want to join in." Done. Ride bikes. Have fun. Repeat. I've been a part of a few of those types of rides and had a blast.

Will note. If you have a 5am one, I am much more likely to show. 5am at six mile or sourlands. @clarkenstein and I will
Host.

I’m also game for fight club rides from my place. Bring yer favorite post-ride libation (alcohol filled or not) for post-ride garage beverages and banter. I can host once conditions improve. It’s a short road ride through the hood to trails.

I have read all comments while eating Ramen,. it was very entertaining

here's my thoughts

Have you guys and gals heard about Whatsapp messenger?
I'm sure you do and some of you might even have it

my suggestion is
First create a whatsapp group riding
name it whatever you wish
Ask all your already group member in Strava their phone number (some might decline some may agree)
Once you've established this
It's very easy to organize a group ride and everyone in whatsapp group will get notifications almost immediately (no need hassle post to MTBNJ)
You can post time, place etc
The use of whatsapp is solely for meet up riding and shit talking too..you can even post anything and everything

But you need a leader
And group ride volunteer

Example:
Me: hey Paul let's go to Coney island tomorrow Sunday start by 7am at saddle river path
And bring your friends with you too
Paul: ok let's do it..

(he didn't even ask for how long the ride how far and what/where to eat)
Or ask what if my bikes get stolen or I get hit by cars? In this sport we are all know the consequences and its unspoken rules that not need to be addresses

Someone send me the Cliff notes, I'm working today and project due for school
Otherwise will need to wait till end week for my contribution

Not exactly sure how to explain this... but let me share my thoughts with you and everyone else for that matter since this has been pretty much concluded and I am going to pat my own back a little bit so bare with me.

We should talk IRL. You are exhibiting some of the signs of the Promoter's Kubler-Ross Cycle.

Plus this doesn’t need a “ ride leader”.
We all have ways to find a loop or whatever and I’m sure someone that shows up will have a general idea of the park if we can find the best route.

I think alternating parks was better than ride leaders because than you have more diversity and can learn a new area.
I personally know one place well and it’s not even legal.

I’d like to try and get rides to start on Time.

This is how I feel, pick a park and let's roll, wildcat will be just us feeling our way around. @BPaze and I did this on Thanksgiving morning and had a good time.

Yes rides are great when we have someone to show us around but I'm looking to get out there and I'll map it around on the fly

Thanks everyone for putting in the time last night. My sinuses are stuffed, and my head will explode shortly....

@Miracle Max Loves Garbage - I think you are saying that the overhead of ride assignments is just too much of a hassle, and TBH, some people are good at leading and some people are good at showing up when told.

I don't think you are going to get 30 people at a beginners ride once per month - maybe on the best july weekend?

so leave the ride planning as free-form, and let the peeps riding decide if they want to post it up or not?
something like meetup.com has the ability to set limits on the rsvps - of course nobody pays attention to it, and if the ride is full on the board they just show up anyway.....

i did some research about the waivers with Norm's added info. Yeah, NO! good call.

So the consensus is to stay informal?
as-is, or are there some changes to make it easier to distill the info from 1,000 posts into a ride?
