I'd like to start using my iPhone on the bike. Especially since discovering Strava. Can anyone recommend a solid stem mount? EBay and Amazon seem to offer generic models.

The lifeproof case and bike mount seems to be pretty solid. The only issue i had with mine was when i forgot my bike was on the roof and drove into my carport resulting in clipping the phone bike mount and snapping it off. Other then that its a great combo. Its a bit pricey but does a great job. Ive had the phone covered in mud and dropped it into a puddle and the case never let anything in. And the mount never failed in keeping the phone on the handlebars/stem. Phone clips in very securely.

I used one that was handed down to me and it was fine, Maybe Lou will chime in with the type it was.
After a couple of spills I got kind of nervous. I think your best bet is one of those Otterboxes and throwing it in your back pocket. Or spend the money on a Garmin 205 or 500.

that was a Dahon Biologic for the 3gs... I'm sure there are other options at this point...
just for phone protection I use the Otterbox Defender (the beastly one) for my iPhone 4 when I mtb and keep it in my jersey... this is hands down the most protection I've ever seen for an iPhone - it's a tank... but if you want to use your iPhone mounted to your bars this isn't for you... although this guy managed to do it...
