HIPPO CROSS!!!

It's 8pm and my 4 year old is running laps around the house screaming:

"Cookie Hand Up!"

"Doughnut Hand Up!"

Had a great time at Hippo today fun course for sure. The announcer was pretty good also he kept me entertained during my race with his comments and play by play action. This week I tried a different strategy by going wide open from the start but after a lap I found this really ain't my style and by the 3 lap I was battling for 8th. On the last lap I was in 9th and I figured this is going to be it til it hit the barriers and my chain flew off. Seems like every CX race I have some sort of mechanical issue but the real question is how to prevent this chain issue in the future any ideas? I'm running a Shimano 2x and really don't want to mess with Sram 1x this year. I guess you can't slam your bike down and expect the chain no to derail. So In the end i was 11th so not all that bad.

Chain keepers help the usual drop chain, they're pretty much mandatory. You don't need to go Sram 1x, you can just put a narrow-wide ring in the front with the Shimano and adjust the chain.

Really enjoyed the course, even with the bumps. But maybe that's because it's hours afterwards...

My biggest regret was not heckling Sean while he was trying to announce.

Yeah, a tough fun course. That one stretch with all the bumps was pretty tiring on the last few laps. Heres to Hippo Cross returning next year!

Loved the event - kudos to the organizers and staff. Had a great low key festival feel to it! Really hope it comes back next year, it will certainly be on my calendar if it does.

Sean did a standout job announcing - he definitely had the whole crowed laughing. Certainly added a ton to the atmosphere and the enjoyment. His knowledge of the local racers added a ton of flavor to the commentary as well.

Really nothing that I would change - yeah the course was bumpy - but hey we all ride the same course, if we wanted it to be smooth we should just ride crits right?

Hello everyone, thanks for coming out! I hope everyone had a great time, raced hard, ate barbecue, drank beer, did keg pull races, hung out with friends, and everything else that goes along with cyclocross!!!

Photos of the event are available here: http://mikestemphotography.zenfolio.com/

Awesome work to all those involved! Thanks for posting a link to my photos Lance. I had to leave a bit early to pre-ride for my enduro race today (4th place!!!) but I did manage to get a few good shots. I just added another handful to the gallery.

I might have to get one of those suffer-machines aka a cross bike and race in next years Hippo!!!

It was definitely a better race to spectate... You could see everything on the course, lots of spectators, vendor, food and beer tents, other activities to participate in. Pigs, Horses, electric fences - I listened to Ren and Stimpy and didn't wizz on the electric fence. The porta-johns were pretty clean.

Found near the MTBNJ tent/Larry's huge truck - a Bern black helmet and gloves. I have both and will be at both NJ CX races this weekend if they are yours/know who they belong to.

That would be Mrs. G's helmet. Not sure about the gloves.

I will see you Saturday. Thanks!
