Guns

I'm a competitive shooter, but I also have guns to protect my family. I think it is irresponsible not too. You have a smoke detectors, fire extinguishers and alarm systems all to keep you safe, why not a gun. A gun is just another tool to help you protect yourself. I also don't believe gun laws do anything to protect people. Criminals don't follow the law, more laws aren't going to make a difference. All they do is make criminals out of the law abiding.

This is good... Thanks for helping me understand.

Competitive shooter = hobby like any other hobbies. No killing involved. This makes sense

Smoke detectors - warn and alert you of a possible dangerous situation where the action is either to extinguish the fire, evacuate and or call the people who can handle the situation. Compare that to a gun? I'm not sure...

Fire extinguisher - Used to extiguish a fire and get rid of a problem and life threatening situation. This comparison make sense.

Alarm systems - deter theft and break ins and alerts of an event and the authorities to take action. I am not sure this is a solid comparison.

Guns - protection against? How frequently have you had to protect your family? AND if you were in that scenario, you would actually use the gun or would you call the police and run and hide? Real talk? I know I would grab my wife and kids and do whatever I could to get away to safety before confronting the person. And if we could not get away, I would submit and cooperate with hopes no one was harmed.

Back to my initial inquiry - The psychology of a gun owner. Why do you need to own a gun other than to kill things.

Ok, I'll bite. It is part of my heritage. It is a piece of who and what I am; killing things is not part of it, and I pray it never is.

If you really want to know more, I'll tell you Sunday.

How frequently have you used you fire alarm? How frequently have you used your fire extinguisher? They are there for WHEN you need them. I would ALWAYS rather have the tool I need for a job/task then regret not having one when I need one

That's the part I don't believe, It is not either or, it is both. If I can retreat, I will. If I can call for help, I will. but the police don't respond instantly, so it is up to me and my wife (who is also trained) to protect the family. I will not submit to someone threatening my life or my families, I will not give them them all the power to decide my fate. The plan is to retreat, to call for help. But at some point, I can no longer run or hide, I some point I need to fight for my family, to protect them. I will not depend on others for my safety.

Because I've called 911 THREE TIMES and got no response. So I bought a gun.
Do NOT trust your life or safety to the police. They have ZERO obligation to protect you. If they never show up to your 911 call, they will not get in trouble.
Or they shoot your dog

I'd buy and own a gun if that happened to me. If I can't trust the system - Absolutely.

I think we should put all the criminals in jail then we won't have this criminal-gun problem anymore.

On the side I am petitioning the government for an Amendment to allow me to bear heavily-armed drones. I think it should be my right to protect my family with drones. And a moat with sharks with laser beams strapped to their heads.

My wife uses the smoke detector frequently to let us know dinner is done.

Fire extinguisher, a couple times in 12 years.

Want to go shoot with me? I'll treat

No thanks!

My father in law used to invite me to go hunting with him before I married his daughter but he always prefaced his invitation with a disclaimer that hunting accidents happen often. I ignored the hint and still married her anyway

Edit - I buttered him up with free beer. 30 packs of Keystone Ice
