Guns

This is intriguing - I never EVER had a desire to own a gun and after reading this, I still don't see the need to own a gun.

I understand if a person wanted to be prepared if society took a turn where we needed hunters and gatherers or if we couldn't rely on @davidcarson48 but we have all of those resources at our fingertips.

Help me understand the need and want for a gun. Do you have a need to imagine killing something?
Guns are really not for everyone. For me, growing up hunting was the way of life until I had to gut a deer on my own- That really ended the thrill for me.

I've shot guns that are "for the experience" and guns are dangerous, it's a slippery subject. We all see what they do when in the hands of someone Ill or un-informed. What it comes down to for me is this. If I need to hunt to put food on the table.. I will. If I need a gun to protect myself( like police) I will. If I need to protect my family with a gun. I will. I know the capabilities of a gun and how to operate them safely.

What are your reasons for owning or wanting to own a gun?

like @rick81721 said... If you didn't hunt as a kid, you wouldn't understand. My advice to anyone who hasn't shot a gun. Is to try it atleast once.

But the grocery store is down the road and you pay more for guns and gear, save that money and go to the store. And you pay a shit ton of police taxes so those reasons don't convince me.

For now, that's what I will do. But we don't know what the future holds, how the world will turn with the current events. It is also my constitutional right to own one. Doesn't mean that everyone should own a gun. I do believe there should be stricter gun laws though.

The future BS - only reason I can think of is if the world had a major event that meant we needed to go back to hunters and gathers. In that respect, I can see that owning a gun and practicing now to be prepared is a valid reason. Also - protection would also be important. BUT why not own a spaceship and survival gear so you can leave this planet.

Constitutional Right BS - that seems to be the last resort justification when gun owners are backed into a corner.

I was troling to see if someone had the balls to come out and admit that you own a gun to kill things or pretend to kill things.

So it's your constitutional right but you want laws to restrict? You can't pick both sides.

I haven't hunted since my kids were born. Before then I hunted with everything from a bow to a 44 mag (boar hunting down south).

Unlike ISIS, I have no interest in thrusting my views on you or anyone else.

Edit: I redacted the remainder of this post prior to posting, as it would have conflicted with the prior statement.

Well since there is no such thing as "catch and release" in hunting by definition we are killing things

The last time I hunted, I watched an 8 pointer for an hour through my scope w/out ever chambering a round.

Hunting does not always call for killing.

I'm a competitive shooter, but I also have guns to protect my family. I think it is irresponsible not too. You have a smoke detectors, fire extinguishers and alarm systems all to keep you safe, why not a gun. A gun is just another tool to help you protect yourself. I also don't believe gun laws do anything to protect people. Criminals don't follow the law, more laws aren't going to make a difference. All they do is make criminals out of the law abiding.

When I lived in Utah there was endless land to go to...Drive off the road for 10 minutes, set up bottles/cans/etc....Hit targets all afternoon, try making 300+ yard shots with my dads ar-15 and my .300 winchester...go home. It was actually pretty fun. Had absolutely nothing to do with killing anything...other than aluminum perhaps? Really cant do that kind of shooting around here unless you are at a range.....which I did a number of times, but its not the same. Shooting around here is like skiing around here (NJ)...you can do it, but its not all that fun.
