Just to clarify.....
Here's how you get lost.... You don't follow the cue sheet and rely on marks on the road and you miss the very first turn onto Headquarters Road. The cue sheet had you rolling out of the back of the park on the toe path. Our group went out of the front entrance of the park onto the road. We did have a lovely ride along the river before we decided to ask for directions. (This was after Poor Iggy, Ellbiddy and Stb222 got away from us). Chainsaw and I (and 2 other riders we picked up along the way) turned around at mile 8ish in the offcourse warm-up ride and found the start of the actual ride. Once we found it, it was a pleasure to see how well marked it was 🙂 We made the call where the 50 mile ride and 63 mile rides split and decided to go with the 50 mile ride. We ended up doing 67 miles for the day thanks to the unplanned "warm-up".
I spoke to a volunteer at the second rest stop and she said the same thing happened to her group when they did a volunteers ride the weekend before. They thought it would be marked at the turn yesterday to prevent that from happening and were surprised to hear it wasn't.
Oh, I had 2 realizations for the day...
1- Booties and thicker gloves will be purchases that will give a great return on the investment.
2- I'm convinced that riding into a head wind is a lot harder than riding up hills. Both was like a double whammy 😀
Iggy thanks for lending me your gloves. I couldn't have done the ride without them. I'll return them to you after I wash them.
Oh yeah, and I made sure to put all 3,300+ calories I burned back in at every rest stop. Chainsaw has evidence of me stuffing my face full of potatoes and yummy kandy kakes at each rest stop like some kind of savage animal. A++ to all of the volunteers for cooking up some awesome rest stop goodies 🙂 Weird thing, I'm still hungry today and I've almost eaten all of the leftover goodies one of the volunteers let me take home in a doggie bag. I'm glad they had a low turnout.... more food for me 😀
All in all it was a great day!! And a lot of fun to see some familiar faces out there!!
