Going Long and Hard.

Friday.

Commute on the fat bike. I got a new rear bag and wanted to make sure it didn't rub on my tire before I did something long. Stopped by the train tracks to fill it with Railroad Spikes, to A) test said bag and B) I need to start collecting them for Finishers' Trophies.

Saturday.

Went big today and pre-rode the D&L Fat Epic 200K route. I got a window because my wife and kids were in the city so you have to take it when you can get it!!

Rode fully loaded so I didn't need to stop for supplies in 8.5 hours. Actually, including taking these 2 pictures I spent less than 15 minutes off the bike. And that was only to swap my extra bottles and food from the saddle bag into the frame bag. Ultra-Endurance races are won in the pits.

My pace was fairly constant at 14.4mph for about 7ish hours. Once it got dark my speed dropped and my average went down. Need to work on that part because my legs felt fine, I think it just dropped because I couldn't see my Garmin anymore.

Liong, it's a Specialized Fatboy Comp. Or, that's what it started as. Only the frame, fork, and wheelset are stock.

It's a PF30 EBB conversion. I used a Problem Solvers EB46 and had some custom stainless bolts made long enough to work in a 100mm shell. No one makes a fat compatible one out of the box. Then I had to swap the stock crank to a 24mm.

Then in the rear I run a dingle set-up with a 17 and 19 tooth. I carry a 5mm with me and can swap between the 2 gears in a couple minutes. If I ride the tracks to a trail, I'll stop and switch it sometimes.

Yeah, the chainline is set in the middle of the cogs. It's only a couple mm in either direction so it's been awesome. This is the 2nd version of this set-up. Originally I had a 32 up front with 17/18 in the back but I needed more cowbell.

Tuesday.

So I had a family gathering on Sunday and then my recovery day on Monday. Didn't realize how deep I went on Saturday until tonight's MTB ride. I was just toast. We also had a couple new guys that are slow as poop so the constant stopping just destroyed me. I have a really hard time with that stuff, my body likes to get into a groove and stay there.

Thursday.

Commute into Summit on the Nature Boy. Odd day as it was pretty warm during the ride in, and then snowing/raining/wetting and much colder during the ride home. Thankfully I take extra layers of clothing with me in the Panniers, luckily one of those layers is a rain suit.

Coming through the Reservation I was riding in a nice fluffy snowfall and it was very pleasant. I can't wait until we get some real stuff 😀
