Going Long and Hard.

Wednesday.

Just my commute up to Summit today on the Single-Speed. I lucked out and missed the rain completely 😀

Tuscobia 150.

I'm starting to acquire gear for Tuscobia. I don't plan on using much of the stuff but there's a mandatory list to start the race. This is the list...

  • Sleeping bag -Zero (0) F degree or lower . However, it can be colder overnight so we recommend a colder rating than 0F.
  • Bivy sack (space blankets/tarps do not count). Tents will not be allowed, as camping is not allowed on the Tuscobia State Trail, per the WI DNR.
  • Sleeping pad.
  • Stove. To melt snow for water. Or cook a gourmet freeze dried meal.
  • Fuel - 4 fl. oz. (either gas, alcohol or 1 canister of propane/butane 100 grams or 6 Esbit tablets). Must finish with these minimum fuel requirements, plan accordingly.
  • Pot or container to melt snow (min. volume is 1 pint).
  • Firestarter (matches or lighter).
  • Headlamp/bike light or flashlight. Suggest minimum ~100 lumen (or more for bikers) that will last for 12 hours on bike or 24 hours (two nights) on ski/foot.
  • 3 Flashing red LED lights, one front facing and two rear facing, and all lights are required to be at least 12 inches off the ground.
  • At least 20 square inches of reflective material, 10 front and 10 back. This is not just something we thought would be fun. It is meant to lessen the chance of you getting run over by a snowmobile on the trail or car at one of the road crossings. You will lose in a 70 mph collision. The more visible you are, the better.
  • 3000 calories – 75 Mile and 150 Mile racers must have 3000 calories of food on them at all times, including at the finish line. (tip: pound of butter or jar of peanut bar is approximately 3000 calories).
  • Helmet strongly recommended for bikers.
I've worked out most of this I think. I need a 0 degree sleeping bag, a pad, and possibly a smaller Bivy.

I bought an MSR MicroRocket stove and a container that can also be used as a pot/container/and storage for supplies including the stove. The whole set-up will be slightly smaller than a 20oz water bottle.

How long do you think it will take you to do the 150 miler? Did you have to convince Tuscobia that you are capable of doing it?

I'm not sure, but the course record is 15 hours. I'd like to think I can be somewhere in that range but I really have no idea until I get there. And you do need to give them a resume but it's not really hard to get in. They make you carry all the gear in case you bonk and end up having to survive in the woods until someone can get to you, which in cases can be a day or so.

I use the same gsi cup... Best out there... If you want to be a super weight weenie look up penny stoves... You can make one out of a red bull can and fit it in the cup for storage when not in use

I don't need it to be super light, but I'd like to be able to put it all into a container, stuff it in the bottom of my frame bag and forget about it. Regardless of how long it takes me, I don't plan on stopping on the side of the trail and making dinner...

I'm going to wear a helmet. And this.

melting snow for water sucks balls. there is a ton of air in snow which makes it a very long and inefficient process. so if you can melt snow with a fire vs using your stove you are better off.

what bivy are you planning on getting? they can get expensive. i have 2. the one is really a bivy shaped emergency blanket, made by SOL. ive used it once, camping in the negatives...not sure if it made a difference, but if youre going for lightweight, and they will accept that, thats an inexpensive way to go.

Love my GSI kit, minus those garbage spoons they include. Toss that thing in the trash. Or bring a knife with you to carve one out of a stick when that one breaks.

JoeLee, I will take you up on that!!

Steve, I have a Park Spork that I'll bring. Thanks for that.

A-aron, I'm not sure what brand my Bivy is, but it was also borrowed 😀

PS-There are only 10 spots left for the Epic if anyone is interested in going LONG without the fear of freezing to death. Reg is only $25, you can't afford not to try it 😀

Very cool jim.
Goodluck and kept your little Peter warm at all times.

I like to join that D&L race...but I do not own fat bike.can you lend me one?

Agreed. Will work on securing Bruce Lee a bicycle.

We have a bunch of guys that aren't doing it so I'll see what I can come up with.
