Going Long and Hard.

2nd place dude, did the W101 course 3x about a month ago in like 36hrs then finished in 6th place at TSE 2 weeks ago.

Gordon Wadsworth finished in 6th for the XL, finished 1st at TSE SS class.

I can't imagine doing the XL after all that.

I am sure you are thinking about next year already. Maybe try the 100 next year, 200 the following and build back to the XL the following?

Why is everybody buying gravel bikes? Even my brother bought one, which is amazing to me considering he hasn’t touched a bike since he trashed mine at least 35 years ago.

Awhile back i followed the Gypsy by Trade blog and i would have never thought Lael would have become such a rockstar. Those were some tough rides she went though on that blog.

Congrats to her🙌🙌

Hey! I was not that far away from you this Saturday at a XC meet with my son. The heat was unbelievable! My wife and I were getting roasted even with sunscreen so we went home and came back at 5 pm when it was bearable. I can't imagine riding 200 Km in that heat!

What would you do different to prepare (or to carry) for this extreme hot weather if you come back? Or is one of those things you don't prepare b/c it's very low probability?

I don't know that there's a fix for me. I've struggled with heat for years and years and years. I've DNF'd Longest Day, multiple MTB races, the NJ 600k, I think 2 Stewart 6 packs? It's just how I'm wired. The ability to be comfortable at -25 comes with a price on the other end.

That being said. Freezing my bottles would've helped. Also, despite being being the laughing stock of the FB Unbound group for asking about bringing a water purifier, I would bring a water purifier. I went over dozens of spots to refill bottles.

Let me save you a little time…. The Katadyn BeFree is what you want. It’s the only acceptable filter in a time sensitive situation.

I watched him come by on Saturday when I rode out to watch the Finish. At that point he was in a group of 100 milers sitting in, I can only imagine how great that felt at that point. The next place guy stopped on the little bridge I was watching from and just sat there. I was like "it's 2 miles to the finish" I don't think he ever heard what I said, he was absolutely toasted.

Meanwhile JayP slapped me 5 and was smiling like he didn't even ride his bike. Unreal.

Somehow I find this post from @Kaleidopete relevant to this discussion...

Yes, a water filter would have helped. A friend did the 200 and he finished near the cut-off. He carried 7 liters of water!

I'm thinking about getting this one. I use a Sawyer and hate it. Not a fan of the 1 l Katadyn flex bottle. Do you happen to know of any bottles that fit the BeFree? I couldn't any, or any adaptors ready to buy. There a couple of files online so you can 3Dprint one but I don't have access to one of those.

Unlike the Sawyer which plays nice with smart water bottles, the 42mm threads on the be free limit the options. For deep backwoods stuff i use the bladder for overnights and transfer to a ‘clean’ bottle for drinking, for day hikes i use the regular bottle with a clip i got from z-packs and just hang it from the shoulder straps of my pack.

Nice setup. I saw that clip on Z-Packs. I'm trying to get the bladder/bottles off my body and onto the bike for a bikepacking trip. Ideally, looking for a 1l Pepsi bottle (very light) with a wider opening and thread compatibility with the BeeFree, directly or via an adaptor. I might try 1l Smartwater bottles and using the Z-Packs bottle holders for shoulder straps (16 gr vs 102 gr of the Revelate Mountain Feed bags), adapting those to hang from the handlebar & stem. The form factor of those might too tall/skinny though.
