Day 1 of the Fire Tower Brevet. Drive into Jersey City with my wife and rode from her school to NYC Velo via the Ferry.

Had a nice day out there, enjoyed the leaf peepin’.

Got into my overnight in New Paltz before nightfall. Checked in and walked across the street for a Burrito, probably gonna call it a night because tomorrow is the hard day.

I’m looking north of Bangor and Bar Harbor, but I’d suspect my wife’s best option will be Bangor. She’s found stuff in Portland but that’s not much different than here.
Move to Bar Harbor so I can camp in your back yard for free. They must be up to like $60 a night these days for a site and you still have to drive to a lobster shack for quarter showers and shit in the woods.

And Tarantino’ing we go.

Day 2, the Queen Stage.

Got up early to hit breakfast as soon as it opened at 6am, wanted to be out the door before 7am because I knew it was gonna be a long one.

Was 35 degrees at the start and I brought zero warm gear other than a stupid lightweight wind breaker. My fingers were absolutely frozen.

Stopped for breakfast #2 at Olive’s before the long push up and over Esopus and Outlook.

Esopus was the easiest Tower, there was a road and then a path straight to it.

The climb up to the Monestary is a monster, even though I’ve done it a few times now it always hurts.

Then we start our hike-a-bike. It’s a good hour of pushing uphill to get to the Tower, there were tons of people up there leaf peepin’

The hike down the backside is what actually sucks. Technical singletrack with constant carrying the bike over shit for 3+ hours.

But I did find this weird rock arena thing where someone made a circle of chairs? Maybe it’s a cool murder spot?

Anywho, I wander through Catskill and cross over the river to hit my lunch spot. This is the only stop for 70ish miles so I ate well.

Lots of super pretty gravel roads going out to Tower #4 but I can only add 10 so, you’re beat.

Hit #4 in the dark, and then realized the backside was Outlooks Mountain hike-a-bike but in the dark. Spent hours in a section I thought was an easy part.

Back on the road I called the Motel to tell the lady I was gonna be there way late and asked if she could just leave the room open, which thankfully she did.

Next 45 miles were mostly on a rail trail. It got cold AF again and I started to feel it bad. I popped off the trail onto a highway to hit a quickie mart and warm up. I emptied my bag and put on my pants and t shirt that I brought for sleeping in, plus the cool gloves I bought at Olive’s in the AM that I didn’t mention before.

Went a bit hard afterwards to warm up and then felt surprisingly comfortable for next few hours to the Motel.

It was nice rail trail riding along a river or some kinda water because there were bridges and swampy cottontail bushes all over.

Get to the hotel and quickly get warm before riding over to the 24 hour Cumberland Farm across the street. Apparently 24 hour means closes at Midnight? It was 12:09!!

Went to bed hungry after a 17-hour day.

Portland home prices are so over inflated at the moment. Bar Harbor is really in the middle of no where and just about everything closes up 8 months out of a year. Bangor is a great choice as is Lewiston. There used to be a shuttle to the Linden Airport years ago to Bangor when we were considering a place on Deer Island. Used to go twice a year and a lunch lady at work had a place near Bangor was who told us about the shuttles.

In a perfect world I'd like to be around Machias and Rogue Bluffs but that's a hard sell for the Wife. She has an hour Commute now so that will realistically be my range from an actual Town. I want to be in a hut.
