Going Long and Hard.

So badass. JimV from hero to legend without even making a 40T cog work with 9 speed. 😀

Sorry, I haven't ridden 9-Speed in like a decade 😉

My professional opinion is that there's an equal opportunity that it may possibly work and that it may not possibly work.

9-Speed Shimano spacing is 2.56mm, Sram is 2.54...10-Speed is 2.35. So the 40T will be .21 or .19mm too close depending on your starting cassette. So technically, a very thin spacer between the 2 will make it work.

Donated. Good luck getting to the end goal Jim! Can't wait to see some awesome pictures and vids of your adventure. The scenes from Tuscobia were pretty sweet!

p.s. Would running a 10 speed chain and setting the outer limit screw avoid the need for said spacer, or does the limit screw mess up all the shift points?

Found some mtbr threads with success. And some not so much. Probably not worth the investment unless I run across a cog cheap. Anyway.

Kick some frozen butt Jim!

We broke the 1/2 way mark last night 😀

Seriously, I'm speechless. Everyone's support is extremely motivating.

Except I took my bike apart and haven't been able to ride this week. My drivetrain is shot and I had to get a new everything. That drained the last of my coin from selling my Camber so I'm officially all in Fat Only now :getsome:

I also swapped my road saddle onto the fatty, changed the grips, and swapped a different rear tire on so it'll be totally different at Marty's tomorrow. Usually not the best idea but the race will be short enough that it won't matter if something is off a bit.

Didn't you just replace the drive train before Tuscobia? Does snow/ice wear this stuff out quicker?

It does to a point. I didn't replace my cassette or pulleys so the new stuff I put on at Tuscobia went to poop faster than it normally would. I normally go through stuff quickly through the winter from riding on salt roads and the beach and places like that. Plus, Tuscobia was like a month's worth of riding 😀

And we're ready for Marty's!! Things that make me nervous. Testing out a new rear tire, trying new grips, and running a carbon road saddle on my fat bike. I have a million miles on this saddle on the road and it's super comfy but off-road I'm worried about the rails snapping. I also went back up to a 34T because I felt the 32 was a little too spinny, and I'm not a spinny kinda guy. I'm also going to run the studded front tire, just in case.

The sickness? 23 pounds flat. WTF!!??

I give 2 weeks before it snaps in half and I build my FatBoy back up 😱

You know what they say about carbon in the cold....

So related to that, JayP has been posting pictures of his ITI prep and he runs a Ti MukLuk over his Beargrease. I'm not sure if it has something to do with it not being to handle a full load or that it's a 170mm rear end and can't run a wide enough tire for expedition racing? Jeff, Charly, and Joe are all running 190mm carbon frames so we'll see if they explode. Although, my friend Robert just snapped his second Borealis riding in PA so I don't know what to think :hmmm:

On another related note, I cracked 6 carbon SuperFly frames in 1 1/2 seasons so me and carbon aren't on good terms.

I like your tire combination. I was looking at the Vanhelga for a rear 4" tire but ended up picking a HuDu thinking that I'll use this tire more year around and not only in the snow. After getting the HuDu I read the VH is pretty good on dry ST too though.

For tomorrow's race I'm torned between running B&L (studded), which are the only tires I've ever used on the fatty--except for a couple of rides on D5s--, or taking a risk and run Larry & HuDu. I'm thinking that I'm going to be back of the pack so the snow should be packed by the time I hit it 🙂 These options are kind of the two extremes! Which one would get your vote?

BTW, 34T ring! I'll be running a 26T with the same cassette😱 I'm a spinner, but still...

:drooling:

Looking forward to seeing the beast tomorrow.

The Vanhelga looks beastly! Plus your making me feel better since your are not running 5" tires😉
