Interesting stuff Ben. That profile looks insane.

Al - Contador isn't doing the Vuelta. And people discuss things. I know you're being a little petulant here. But people like to analyze things and play "what if?" It's part of the fun. Just let it go, as you're not going to be able to write your way to convince people otherwise.

Speaking of Cav, he wants a world championship:

Seriously, is Cav in league with Armstrong and Merckx? In some ways the sprinter is like the closer in baseball.

The Veulta was picked up my universal sports, as is the Giro, so you can catch coverage there....Still, it is the bottom of the Grand Tours.

You can't compare Cav to those other riders because Merckx and Armstrong were not sprinters, well not Armstong anyways. It is more specific these days that in the past, so comparing these guys doesn't go far. But you can compare him to other sprinters, where he is near, if not the top.

That's why I say the sprinter is like the closer in baseball. 40 years ago, was there a specialist like a sprinter in biking? So in baseball, you can say that Rivera is the best closer ever. But closers have been around for like 30 years, at most. And it's really only the last 15 years that it's become a star profession.

I don't know the answer. I'm just theorizing.

Reading through the thread from the start I'm suprised people are still attributing Cav's wins to Renshaw and HTC as though any other sprinter could fill his shoes. The HTC train was built around Cav because he is the fastest sprinter in the world. End of. Otherwise, there would be a steady string of sprint based teams, and their solitary dominant sprinter; going back to the 80's. That isn't the case, because there hasn't been anyone like Cavendish since the Lion King. Who, by the way, benefited from leadouts more than any sprinter that came before him. The fastest guys get the fastest trains. Honestly, this isn't being debated anymore amongst people that know their road racing. With the possible exception of Tyler Farrar's house... And secretly they all know the truth too.

My comment about cavendish was that when he is considering a move to another team, he must consider who is going to be his lead out train, no? If sky offers him a contract without Renshaw, or others who are able to lead him out, then what good is the offer? I would imagine that this has to be a factor in his contract talks and it must complicate the process.

Certainly the makeup of the team has something to do with it. Sky is (I believe) a UK-based team so they try to keep that talent there. I think that's the draw with Cav going there. I can't imagine you'd see him join a BMC or Saxo Bank or Leopard-Trek, ie, anyone with a GC contender. So much of the Highroad team is geared to getting that stage finish I can't imagine you can have a GC contender and a sprinter and hope to support them both.

So I guess nobody is going to answer my question then? :)

I'll bite: unless Stapleton can't find another sponsor (unlikely), Cav stays. That team is built around him. They've got stage hunters and guys who can excel in different races or stages (Martin, Velits, Van Garderen), but come Grand Tour time, it's all in for Cav. Sky has too many irons in the fire (Geraint Thomas, B. Wiggins). And Wiggins is the great hope. (Esp. with France having done so well in the tour this year.) Rosbif vs. Voeckler!

I think Elzoller should run this thread.
