Fatbiker Sighting

In almost 3 full years of fatbiking year-round, I have yet to see another fatbiker in the wild, except for pre-arranged rides or races. Today I met some dude named Dave riding a nice carbon Beargrease at Hartshorne. 'Bout time.

I have had 4 different fat fatbike sightings at allaire... could have been the same person riding just 4 separate sightings.

I saw 2 guys at raysyown in October '13 and saw one this past July up at Kingdom Trails. I doubt there's many FB riders in south jersey (true SJ) since we usually don't get snow that sticks around for long.

I had a Fat fatbike sighting this summer at Belleplain. I however did not witness a mountain lion nor a sasquatch this year anywhere!

Burlington County is definitely SJ, but if you look at some if the trails listed under the SJ section, they're not in SJ. Just a pet peeve.

Are these fat fatbikes more difficult to pedal and climb due to the massive size and weight of the tires? It would in theory create much more rolling resistance and unsprung weight..:hmmm:

Not as different from a regular MTB as you might think. Cornering and climbing traction are better on a fatbike IMHO. There are a lot of light fatbikes showing up this year, including a few I've seen that are under 22 lbs. I haven't ridden one that light yet, but mine is around 27 lbs, and it's pretty nimble. And fun as hell to ride. (Sorry, had to mention the "fun" part because the fatbike haters are tired of hearing about it. :wedgie🙂

Anyone that is a Fatbike naysayer is cordially invited to sit on my wheel for a ride. Then you can see what they're capable of, at least until I drop you. 😉

Saw a dude rolling around Dover on a Walgoose (walmart fatbike) wearing a full face lid. Uber extreme!!! Thing did look pretty cool though.

I think it is rude and hazardous to other Fatbike lane users to wear headphones. You can say whatever blah, blah excuse you want. But when you have earbuds in even one ear, even at a fairly low volume you cannot be as attentive and considerate to others coming up ahead or possibly behind you as otherwise. Concentrating on the audio input, takes away concentration from what you are doing physically and the sounds you would need to pay attention to. Even without headphones sometimes when you are in the zone, you don't notice the people behind or infront of you well enough ahead, and you can get startled when you see their presence. Especially in an area that allows horses, don't attempt riding with buds, you don't want to startle and get whacked by an ultra-muscular half-ton plus animal.

Also if you feel the need to use headphones when riding a mountain fatbike even when bombing down a hill at over 15mph, you likely have already messed up your brain's neuroplasticity and you just cannot simply "be" without an electronic distraction without becoming ill at ease. How can the mental stimulation and activity of mtbing by itself not be enough for you? This is an underlying, deeper problem you must ask the right questions to get at, a technical solution like biking with headphones cannot fix it, it just a weak palliative you want to use. The author Charles Eisenstein pointed out in an interview, that just the way we exist and relate to our environment causes us profound suffering and hurt. According to him, we are living in an age of acute and extreme separation, we think there is a discrete and separate self, removed from the natural world, and that other people and natural processes are not a natural extension of ourselves(this is influenced alot by Buddhism). One of the consequences of this is that we perceive the world, other people and its processes as hostile, so we seek to dominate them with an ensemble of money, technology and science. According to Lars Svendsen's study the concept of boredom did not exist for the English speaking peoples until 1760. Something happened in the intervening years with how we define ourselves and how interact with our environment(more like against in our society), that makes just being hurt. Thus when we don't have constant activity, or distraction like that from tv or a personal music player with headphones, it is painful, since we cannot any longer be alone with our sense of ourselves in that moment without discomfort, so we say were are bored. But the distractions we seek just hide and allow us to perpetrate the cycle.

and thread if you got nothing else to do 😀
