Electric unicycle just went by my house at 30+ ....at least (s)he had a helmet
No plate. Had a blinky.

Quick search for NJ law on these - there isn't any, cause they are not defined....shouldn't be on public streets

Still defined as a motor vehicle by law. May not have to register and insure, but must conform to motor vehicle statutes like bicycles (keep to the right, stop at traffic control devices, etc). Only exception to this definition that I've seen is electric wheelchair, which the court decided was an extension of the human body. How did the court decide that? Someone in an electric wheelchair was drunk and arrested for DWI and it went to appeals court.

In New Jersey, a "motor vehicle" generally includes any vehicle propelled by a power source other than muscular power, such as a car, truck, or motorcycle, but excludes vehicles that only run on rails or tracks. The definition can vary slightly depending on the specific statute or regulation, with some statutes also explicitly including or excluding other types of vehicles like motorized bicycles, low-speed electric scooters, and trailers.

Was just telling my best friend from town about this kid, while making a left through stopped traffic. As I started the turn, an e bike going 40 mph crossed in front of my hood on the right shoulder. He was lucky by 2 seconds.

Some positive ebike content. One of the guys I work with who is on King County SAR sent this over to me. I've been up on Cougar Mountain since my company has a repeater site up there. Yes there are cougars there. While working up there you see them prowling around the perimeter fencing.

The bigger issue is telling which one of these categories the "vehicle" is as it goes by you at 15mph. It's complex. A police officer is supposed to have reasonable suspicion of a traffic offense before initiating a stop.

Late to the party, but are there any registration/insurance requirements for boost-type e-bikes as typically used by MTBNJ’ers?

No, no reg or insurance requirement as of today.

or we can just create a video game where people upload pics of the interior of buildings - and when they need a closer look, put a special Pokemon there.
hmm - is the camera open while you are using the AR to see it? wonder if it was captured???
brilliant.

Initially Tapinto had a picture of one of the ebikes embedded in the front end the SUV. Sometime last night, that reader contributed picture was removed from the site.

Those streets are 25 mph limits. My assessment is that the driver, who fled the scene on foot, was exceeding the limit.

It doesn't appear e-bikes had anything to do with this one. As someone who lives near a main road (Rt 13) with a 25 MPH limit, it's pretty rare I see that limit being observed by drivers. Twp police rarely patrol the road. They would probably fund a week's pay if they did, so no idea why they don't.

most of the news reports state that allegedly the driver did it on purpose and tried to flee the scene. so sad for the parents either way.

and yes that picture was horrible its still posted on other sites.

There's a 3 mile stretch on my way to work that is a 25mph limit. It's pretty heavily trafficked. It's mostly residential, it's where kids walk to and from school, usually see people on bikes (lower income area, mostly people going to work)... If I'm not going at least 30, people will always pass either on the shoulder or over the double yellow. It's insane, just last week I was going 30 and right after passing a crossing guard the lady behind me floored it to pass me on the shoulder while honking her horn and waving her finger out the window. And then she went into a parking lot a block away! WTF? Had to be a completely wreckless asshole to get somewhere literally 1 second faster? I just don't get it.

About time. People were obviously riding them anyway, but it was pretty silly that the shuttle companies weren't allowed to take them anywhere.
I didnt even realize they were illegal....just kinda funny in Utah...you can drive anything anywhere and shoot guns out the window of whatever your driving. (find a road sign in the dessert that ISN'T full of bullet holes 🙂 ) But e-bikes? NO WAY lol.

I didnt even realize they were illegal

They are classified as motorized vehicles, so they were legal anywhere that was already legal, like Slickrock. All the singletrack on BLM land was off limits, but I doubt many people cared. The shuttle companies were serious about not taking e-bikes up though. I was on a shuttle to Mag 7 last year, and this dude gets on with no bike. He had driven his e-bike all the way up to the drop off point and stashed it, drove all the way back down, and then took the shuttle back up so he could ride his e-bike on Mag 7 and back to town. Ridiculous.
