Drilling Clownshoes

Has anyone tried drilling the clownshoes to light them up a bit? Can you do this after the wheel is built? Any idea of how much weight can be removed-so, is it worth it?

Of course, I know this would weaken the rims and that's a concern if you ride them on rocks/dry trails, but for cruising along in the snow this should be less of an issue (I'm planning to use this wheelset for snow and have another one for riding on dry/rocky single track).

Pretty sure I've seen this over on MTBR. People have enlarged the unused spoke holes. Weight savings can't be that great, though.

I did it on my marge lites. saves between 50-60 grams per rime

Thanks. I picked up some pics from mtbr last year (below) but I don't remember the quoted weight saved for these. I thought it would be more like 100 gr but maybe not.

I think I might leave them as they are for now. Maybe I'll get me a set of Nextie's 65mm next spring for non-snow riding.

I've drilled Darryls before. Weight loss was minimal, hardly worth the effort on a Clown Shoe IMO.

Has anyone weighed (or priced) a Fatboy rim? That hole pattern seems like it should yield a pretty light aluminum rim.

That's pretty light for a 90mm rim. Clownshoes are 960g. But Nextie 90s are 650g 🙂.
