Don't deny it, the KOM...can it help you better yourself as a rider?

Something isn't making sense to me, let me bust out the calculator:

372 @ 193lbs (87.5kg) = 4.26 w/kg, which is totally realistic... as well as Jims numbers, I can relate to them better because im closer to his weight than yous guys.

but

460w @ 215lbs (97.5kg) = 4.7 w/kg, which is pretty damn strong, i imagine he races cat 1 road/pro mtb and destroys it? Thats some serious horsepower, i imagine if he can do 400-425w for an hour he'd win almost every TT in the area?
We kid but that is for real @Dairyman #s. He was on the best zwift race teams, does a ton of lifting and very focused on segments. He doesn’tbrace outside much and but him and I won the last bearscat team race and he gave Monty fits the next year at bearscat 50 ss. He is mega powerful on the flats but equally a steing mtb rider. At medfor mayhem it came down to him, Galletta and patrick collins in the sprint. I believe at one point he was trying for 5 w/kg

Attaching my zwiftpower screenshot and second two are Don’s. He’s a beast on a bike.

The big boys don't ride much over 2 hours. It's all structure. Anything over 2 will destroy your low end. If you need food you rode too long. If you want to ride over 2 get skinny and kiss your short power goodbye.

I recently went down hole of comparing the strava app to my 510. Water Co and Nesh have a thick tree canopy AND bodies of water that just hold the humid in and it is usually the highest when I ride in the AM. Anyways, I noticed a few people getting PR's / crowns with the app and their GPS line was all over the place. Anyways, the comparison was pointless because there was no control to compare against. But it just proves that if you have really twisty trails and heavy tree canopy that you are going to see some funky results. And the faster you go, the worst it gets. As noted, this is less of an issue on the road but can still happen for the same reason. So really if you are within a sec or two of the KOM, it is basically the same time since there is no way to compare the accuracy between the two times.

All that being said, I am 1 sec back on two fast sections currently and it is annoying lol
Yeah... Nesh and some parts of Pennypack are rough for GPS tracking. I've mentioned that to newbies at Nesh - forget trying to follow Trail Forks - the trails are too close together for the GPS to accurately show where you are. Your best bet is to ride a lot with someone who knows the trails until you learn them. It took about 10 rides following Workboot before I could confidently ride the "standard" lap at Nesh solo.

so you mad someone else is more devoted to stealing your KOMs than you are? thats how this game works
More devoted? Probably bot but I love competition! Dan G and I went at it for about 2 years after meeting and if I showed you where some of the road segments were then to where they are now you would be shocked. I’m talking hills too, not just flat stuff. https://strava.app.link/RphyTWid9rb I mean just look at the power in the top ten in this segment. I want to say most are with a PM. Dons, Derek, Mine, Tony’s, Jim’s…this was us pushing each other over and over

Another example of using segments for training…before wilderness this year I started with efforts up Gambrill park road near the watershed. These were about 8 min efforts and I did 3 repeats. Next I chose 4 diff 5 min hills. Then the last day of prep was repeats on a 45 sec seg here.

Funny you mention that... during my last ride at the Shed, part of the ride was a long slog up Fishing Creek Rd. About 30 min of misery on my enduro bike. I do see a lot of road riders on the paved roads (Fishing Creek is now basically gravel). If I lived around there, I'd definitely road ride there. That would be a lot of climbing.

man i need to gain 50 more pounds so i can talk about all these big watt bombs yall throwing around

just to get back on topic, you're better off doing structured workouts over chasing KOMs; it certainly is a game and its fun and all, but to me its just like twitter for bike rides

Every ride I do here with the exception of an occasional sunday ride is ratio as they call it. More than 1k climbing per 10 miles. Most are more like 10 miles 1.25k climbing

So I did the steuctured stuff for two years with arias and saw gains but much stronger now winging it so bot sure that always applies. More important is doing z1,z2 or z5 when u should. Z3/4 are garbage unless racing.
The watt bombs are just big guy talk. My best 20 min w/kg is barely 4.

Agreed.... Reason why I almost never try for road KOMs anymore... if I do happen to be on my road bike I'm probably doing a structured workout... And I would rather do 5x5@x power for all 5... Not one great one and 4 pieces of shit

Why can’t you do 5x “up 53 the hard way” seg as repeats? The rabbit is what does it for me. I don’t chase prs but chasing the kom always makes u dig deep.

Very simple... I want to be steady state and controlled for 5 min.... When I'm in xc shape... I can do 5x5 @395-400w... I want to see 400 w at minute 25 when I'm done... Not 200w and be dragging ass. Bc I spent 4 min at 600 watts... It's a 25 min effort and I want all 25 minutes to be quality.

This and not my ftp is the biggest difference I noticed from the time I started training thru racing pro... my FTP number didn't go much higher... I did lose 15-20 lbs which is significant... But I could also have my last lap be on par with my first lap and that's where I saw my biggest gains in racing. Being better able to manage all of the huge bursts needed for an xc effort. Ftp and w/kg doesn't mean a fucking thing if you die after 60 min.

Agreed but the right grafe/length hill will give the same result.

Not gonna lie, reading this thread since the 1st post had me go after a segment this morning. KOM is held by a teammate. I've been riding my geared HT as a road bike and it was around 5:15am. I would not attempt this during the day as there are 3, maybe 4 stop signs and it's basically "Main St." Got close to the Top 10, but not paying for Strava to see where I stand, but I'm close.
