Hey Poo 😀

i think your onto something here.

Check the VholdR forums. The community is really good about posting problems and resolutions. The tech guys jump into the forums too so you know you are getting good guidance.

I would look to ensure that your computer has all of the correct drivers and other stuff it needs to handle the video from the cam.

Worked with very quick-and-responsive tech support. Turns out my home laptop and home-built supertower are yesterday's tech for 1080p high-def. Need a minimum dual core 2.8ghz or quad core 2.6. I do have my work laptop which meets the spec and works. Good. But now I have to upgrade my tower. Great. More spending.

i see you took snydertown, was this the first time you took that road? I tried it for the first time this past week and it is a gem.

Yes, I took it on your mention. That whole area is super duper. This morning and last night I saw maybe 2 cars through the whole region.

This it too familiar...... Im constantly send text messages to my old longtime friend asking him things like "who the f* is (Insert female name here)". Sometimes we figure it out, sometimes I'm at a total loss. Sometimes the revelations are shocking...... 😀

1986 was such a long time ago. And my yearbooks are gone. I'm pretty sure I did not have sexual relations with that woman. Although who knows 🙄 I've forgotten more things than I remember.

Snydertown is included in most of my road rides.

If I could make a suggestion, you might linger a bit longer on those Sourland backroads. When you get to the end of Snydertown, make a left on Stony Brook Rd. Then right on Mountain Church Rd. Then left on Rileyville Rd. Then right on Ridge Rd. Then right on Lindberg Rd (freshly paved BTW). From there you can take either Spring Hill Rd or Hollow Rd. back down to Rt 518 - either choice is good. This will add a little mileage to your journey but those roads are definitely worth it.

Definitely going to do more of that!

Commute ride to work from home this morning. The hills make it tough to be mellow. Just an awesome route. Best ever.

My legs are hurting a bit. I have 140 miles in 3 rides last 4 days, with a back to back effort just now. Then I'm on an early freight train at Allaire tomorrow, and then a death march of sorts on Friday. :drooling:

glad to see you finally hit up poor farm, what did you think?

looks like you aren't have a problem getting some saddle time in...

Allaire Txgiving morning

ChrisG, Bill (scalpel6) and I hit up Allaire at 7am before Valet Parking went into effect. We did close to an hour warm-up, and then picked up some late sleepers at 8am.

The conditions were pretty fair to good to bone dry in many stretches. Whoever said it was a sloppy mess may have been in a different park 🙄

ChrisG puts together some good flow!

Oh yeah, almost forgot. When I got home I made a mass pile of buttermilk pancakes with BACON. I never eat bacon anymore, but that shit's so good once a year.

good one. what about New road, that's pretty swoopy.

that is a good climb, i hit it sometimes but doesnt normally make it into many of my loops, i was avoiding it for awhile since the tarred and stone it in the late summer.

Thanksgiving
Allaire ride in the AM as above.

Went with boys MTB at Mercer. They are practicing cyclocross dismounts and remounts. Getting good.

Then, at dinner, I think I hurt myself. Mrs. Kush makes an awesome turkey with everything.

Friday
AM, went out with Norm to explore the nether regions of MD. We tried to follow Sean's (winter?) route, and the issue was that there just weren't trails where the GPS said there were. We kind of went up and down same ridge / road to make sure we didn't blink and miss it, then gave up trying to follow it exactly.

Then we ran into a cantankerous old man with a dual barrel shotgun who strongly suggested that we weren't welcome to keep going into the direction we were going, so we turned back. We did quite a bit of hiking, a bit on the road, and finished off with some with some "groomed" trails.

We were both on SS, which I think is the right bike for this job. The bikes get trashed a bit.

Then I used up 3 tubes for 2 flats 🙄. Schwalbes are going into the trash. They're old and their skin is cold.

So this wasn't a death march, it was kind of an explorer stay alive march.

Then later in the day we had some turkey dinner leftovers with the Zurawskis, and then finished off the long day with my late Friday night hockey, which pretty much wiped me out for the day and the week.

Saturday
Took the boys to Allaire. Saw people with downhill gear with full face helmets riding along with people without helmets. That place attracts some weird people.

The younger one keeps asking for a geared bike when he sees the older spinning up the hills in "1st gear". Not until the Spring. We'll get Nick some kind of a small cross bike, and Daniel will get Nick's 6-speed.

On sunday, got family stuff, kind of bummed J isn't going to 5th Street in the evening. That is an awesomely fun cross friendly race that I just cannot make during the week.

On Tuesday, we rode at the magical place with scary bridges and many berms. Slick as anything. Much fun though. It got to 33 degrees by the end, for some dumb reason I didn't wear my Lakes.

We still managed 9.1 mph average, which is pretty good considering how slippery it was.

Can't wait for SNOW rides. Mtn Kings on deck.

Halloween candy road ride.

3 hrs
50 miles
17.5 mph
125 bpm (low and slow)

Why Halloween candy? I'm out of Clif bars.

A stupid old SUV nicked my elbow with a passenger side mirror. That is either intentional or someone was texting and not paying attention. Either way it made me angry. What if it was 2 inches over? So wished for a stoplight so I could unleash the inner me on that f-er.

Aside from that, great base building ride.

In other news
- I've upgraded my work laptop to WIndows 7. I like.

- I love Amazon. My original Vholdr crapped out. Took me 3 seconds to RMA, they sent out the new unit next day with 1-day shipping, and sent UPS to pick up the old.
The new one works great.

Do you monitor your HR thru out the ride or are you that good at using your exertion as an indicator??? Next question, how often do you find yourself getting out of the Base zone??? Ok all done interviewing Kush😱

Edit: Here are some of my slow rides I have been doing...I am going by feel alone and have been contemplating using my HR monitor but I'm not sure I am at that point yet...Keep going on feel or start up the hr monitor....Help a brudder out😀

Hi Spence!

I'm probably not nearly as knowledgeable as Norm or Ben or some others, but here goes

I'd say use your monitor, its kind of fun to track and measure. You can do that without getting obsessed with Zones etc, but knowing your LTHR is really leveraging the precision that an HR monitor gives you.

And if you are serious about training with a purpose, then you do need to use an HR monitor, and you do need to do some math.

But I guess the first question you need to ask is how serious you are and what are you goals from training with a purpose?

You can certainly use perceived exertion (feel) instead of an HR monitor. Personally I cannot use that alone, but I'm also a gadget geek.

If you do want to do structured training, you need to figure out your LTHR.

I'll give you an example of how I did mine.

I got mine from looking at my cross races. It's a short race at high intensity, so it works well to measure LTHR. I took the average from a couple recent races, 176, and divided it by 1.05 (105% of LT for that particular distance). That confirmed my LTHR - 167.

Now my zones are as follows:

1. 109-135
2. 137-147
3. 149-155
4. 157-167
5. 169+

So to answer your question, I didn't get out of Zone 2 at all during this ride. The goal was to ride in Zone 1 and 2, mission accomplished! Now if this was a hilly ride through Sourlands, I'd be much more erratic and for sure dip into 4, and be in that brown zone referred to in Vreeland's thread.

And even though this was Zone 1 and 2, I felt like I got a workout.

I heart Garmin Connect. Here are my training stats for the year.

09%20training%20hours.jpg

Seems like a bunch. However, according to Friel, this would put me below a Cat 4 threshold for training hours of 350 to 500. Of course those stats do not include crosstraining like hockey, but it's still a revelation of my limitations on how much I time I don't have to train. For a Cat 3, its 500-700 hours per year. That's a lot. Note that these are road cats, which are not same as MTB cats.

* I guess I should qualify this with two things - a) I've gotten my first road bike in April this year; and b) I was out for 6-8 weeks with a torn knee. Counting those out, if I don't have a change in lifestyle in 2010, I should pull about 500 hours. But interruptions are the norm not the exception...

Are these the Friel zones? I think they're a bit outdated. The L3/Tempo zone is stupid small. 6 bpm across the range? Pretty unrealistic. That's from an approach that doesn't believe in L3 training so it conveniently makes it disappear.

I wish GC broke down the HR by time in zone.

They are Friel zones. What's your spread like?

Yeah I think I have to step it up a little...My goals are a simple as of now and my riding HAS been inline with what I am trying to do...That is ride 7-8 hours weekly with one of those ride being 2.5 to 3 hours...I have become more structured and haven't lost a bit of joy about getting on my bike...That is what can not be sacrificed (funfunfun)...I have some homework to do...Thanks bro and cya round🙂
