My best to you on a speedy recovery, I had issues last fall as well and it totally sucks. Unfortunately, Allaire is known for its Ticks and Chiggers. Speaking of Chiggers, we are entering our "season" soon.

I'm sorry to hear that. Early detection means a fast recovery. Thanks for the heads up. Take care.

Lyme Disease

Ride Allaire frequently, Round Valley & Hartshorne occassionally. At some point in May got tick bite and eventually diagnosed with Lymes. Luckily caught it immediately and after 5 weeks of antibiotics, feel pretty much back to normal.
Always check body after ride, especially behind knees, back & armpits.

They are back, we were out for a late afternoon hike and I found a couple on my arm. Just be on the lookout.

was in Allaire yesterday for few hours. this thread (and the other about ticks) got me so paranoid I went upstairs and took a second shower and threw the clothes I was riding in in the wash 😉

thanks for the warning.

QUESTION: what tick-repellant spray do people use?

My experience

The first few warm days they are out for blood. Last year in late Feb. my dog ran into a nest and had a few hundred of them on her leg. Another time I was with Alex and Matty at Deer Park late winter/ early spring when I was dusting them off me. I prefer spraying my clothes down with permethrin and spray my skin with Off.

There are a lot of organic sprays out there that do not put chemicals into your skin.
My one friend uses a spray with Rosemary, and claims never seen a tick.

Sorry go hear it, at least you caught it.
There is a new self-test kit now on the market that if you have the tick that bit you, in a few minutes it will show if it carried the lymes bacteria. Its about $25. I will see if I can find the link from the hunters forum it was posted on.
As soon as the weather his above 40 they start coming out.

I like that idear.... I pulled one from the back of my sons head... He is always roaming in the woods behind the in laws and the ticks are vicious...

Just use a tick repellent, check yourself periodically during rides, and check yourself and your gear before you get in your car. When home, check again, and shower.

I was at Allaire last week taking my buddy out for his first ride there, we were only out for an hour and he found a tick on his leg while we were sitting in the car. We checked each other before we left the lot and that was the only one.

If you find them right away(less than 24 hrs) the chances of catching Lyme disease is pretty small. Fact of the matter is, if you ride in the woods (no matter where you are in NJ) you run the risk of coming in contact with ticks.
