Deer Ticks

i do ride a lot, and already had 3 ticks engorged in me over the last 3 weeks. I spray with OFF (deet) and check myself often during the rides, and after, and then i shower afterwards. if you can post a link to the tick test kit id appreciate it

ticks

are worse by any water, I prefer not to stop at all when I pedal, but this time of year it pays off to stop and do a quick check.

whats the best way to remove a tic ?

I use tweezers designed for splinters... Pull slowly... Very slow

To add to that.. make sure to grab the tick as close to its mouth as possible and pull away from your skin slowly. You're not supposed to grab the tick by the belly area because you can push possible infections the tick might be carrying into your body after it's bitten you.

rode over near the power lines yesterday, must have hit a nest. had them everywhere. searched for 20mins got most of them. Searched again, got more. Got home found 2 deer ticks in me. had only been 3-4 hrs so need to find out if i can take doxy for a couple days or if i need the full dose again

I'm no doctor, nor did I play one on tv....but from what I understand is that anti-biotics take a little time to build up in your system to actually do anything. I've also heard that ticks must be attached for at least 24-48 hours to cause any issues. I would wait until you get the telltale rash or bullseye before you start an antibiotic regimine. And yet another thing I've heard is that small doses, or stopping before the prescribed time period can help cause anti-biotic resistance bugs in your system. If all that fails, talk to your doctor.

i made the mistake of burning the tick, which makes the gut-juices squirt out... From now on I will only use tweezers. you are correct tho 10 day min on the antibiotics

Ticks and hair...

I know wrong trail forum but it's still a tick question. Rode 6M Mon from the canal side to S. Middlebush, stopped to take a breather and do a tick check. Found one caught in the hair of arm, plucked it away then looked at the rest of me. Glad I wore a yellow shirt, had at least a dozen or so on me, the day I decided not to wear my leggings and sleeves of coarse. Kinda freaked me out, like bugs and stuff just not on me. Took the road back to parking lot. Now my question is, I have dreads so I'm still kinda buggin out thinking that I have a nest of ticks in my hair. Got home washed hair...throughly. Is washing your hair good enough or is there something that I can use to wash my hair with that will kill any ticks that might be in there?

sounds like you went through a nest of ticks; pretty sure they will not next in hair, just keep checking [arm pits, groin, ears, hairline etc].

The ticks that give Lyme are soooo tiny you can hardly see them. The bigger ones are no problem at all and will not give you any disease at least in the North East.

So far so good...

Been checking since last ride and everything seems to fine, it's more my nerves than anything right now. First time and last time that I ride without my leggings and sleeves, will not be doing that again. At least I wear bright colored shirts when I do ride just for that reason, easier to see ticks. Thanks for answers and suggestions.

You do not have to get a rash to have Lyme. Most people do not. Your doc can always do a course of antibiotics just in case. We live in tick central, they crawl up our screen door they are so bad. I have seen some people completely incapacitated by Lyme Disease that was not treated and went on for years. Trust me, better safe than sorry. This time of year especially with the nymph ticks out.

And you can get it from the larger ticks, it is just a lesser chance. Hell, my neighbor got Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever from a tick down here and almost died.
