Chapter Lead: Deer Park
JORBA.ORG
Team MTBNJ Halter's
Most of you know or not I took JORBA chapter lead at deer park back in July of last year. I have a meeting this Wednesday with our park super and thought input from users could be beneficial. I have my own suggestions of improvements and possible new trails as well.

I'd like to pick back up a regular once or twice a month brush back to keep overgrowth at bay.

Gonna put some TMs up shortly for perennial wet areas. Keep a look out for those.

The pickup in maintenance has been noticeable, so thanks for that! I know everyone says "new trail builds" for just about every park when it doesn't make sense...but this park really needs one or two additional long pieces of singletrack. Trail to the school is great, Rogue is great (but rogue!) plus a couple of others. Would really move up a level if some of the worn-out fire road was replaced.

Yep DP is looking good thanks to @mattybfat and friends. Thank you. 🙏 As for suggestions, I’d love to see a switchback here. The climb is stiff and eroded and kills the buzz you get when coming off Rogue. 😏

Dually noted, this was always tops until emtb 🙂
So yes this will be introduced as one of the improvements along with green trail and a few small areas.

Don't put in too big an ask in the first meeting!

Also, restoring an abandoned trail, or historical road/trail is easier than getting approval for new.

see if they have evasive species mitigation training - or if you can just blow up the multiflora rose and Russian olive.

Safe parking is a thing. (thank them for the new lot?)
Mention you collect garbage and recycling.
Using biodegradable chainsaw bar oil?

good luck!

Maybe a park-wide brushback, and dump the pile on the driveway of the a-hole that got Deer Park road closed? Not that we're still sore about that or anything...

Well, like you said you probably know the wet spots:
1. The long muddy, rocky, water trickling climb when coming from the new lot or school and headed to Rogue (can't pinpoint the location)
2. The mudhole with the rotted/twisted logs after the rock bridges on Orange (before the Waterloo descent, after going left from Rogue).

I like the challenge of the climb out of Rogue as well as Green up. I'm probably an outlier though. 😛

It's not all on that guy but he pushed that boulder. The Culvert just before the lot was deemed unsafe mainly for emergency vehicles and was/is supposed to be replaced by state. The property owner owns road side and road to that culvert. As of now only state has permission as they need access to that damn. State initial plan was to build road back from New lot but that's been axed supposedly because of highlands. So I would imagine culvert gets fixed and call it a day but be sure the old lot is not coming back. Hope this helps.

That culvert hasn't changed shape during the last 20 years of 25,000lbs horse trailer rigs crossing it. That was just a marginally passable excuse the state could give for closing the road, to get the guy to stop whining and litigating at them.

The new lot is great progress, and hopefully restores some activity to the park, but for a few years there it was damage done. Fewer people using it -> more overgrowth -> fewer people interested in using it -> repeat.

You haven't been back in there in a while I'm guessing. I did a shit ton of cutting back and it has gained some traction. It also has its own lead Jorba rep (a first) with upcoming scheduled TM. Hopefully you can come out and lend a hand to improve the trail experience.

See sinkhole on Rt80...

Haven't been down 80 since the first one. In fact we drove over it the day before the first one dropped. Sucks for Patty as she hasn't seen her folks since and hoping to get up there for Easter.

I swear just filling the abandoned mine shaft with money and paving over the top would be faster and cheaper than whatever NJDOT has spent the past 2 months not doing...

Been to WC 2x since the EB hole. No problem for an early morning weekend ride, but not so sure what it's like now after work or on the weekends with both EB and WB holes.
