Dahon folding bikes talk

Thanks Delish! I'm eyeing a singlespeed folder. Mu Uno would be nice or Speed Uno. I'll be 2.5mi from Highbridge too :hmmm:

FTR I'll be back in CE

If your ride is ~12 round trip I suggest not going singlespeed. Surely SS is lighter and cheaper but I find the folder to be much more of a sit and spin type bike and having gears is really nice. Ours is the Vitesse D7HG model and by the specs is only marginally heavier than the Uno. Either way, you probably want fenders and maybe a rack in order to be a really useful city bike, both of which come stock on that model. Plan on getting a Brooks saddle or similar because the stock saddle is way too squishy for longer rides.

Hi Manny,

Have you seen the Brompton folders?
They are extremely versatile and as lightweight as folders go. Simple to fold, really easy to carry or to roll through stores with a shopping basket on top.

After seeing them in action, I think I might need one to just have in my car. Smart design, well thought out, lightweight and fun. You can even get a ti Frame. Really.

Of course they cost more, but stuff that's really worth it usually does.

I rode a Dahon folding bike 5 days a week rain or shine because it is the only type of bike you can take on the path during rush hour (has to fold). They wobble a bit compared to standard bikes and are not cool but it saved me 20-30 minutes each way to and from the train. I barely did any maintenance and it kept going. I highly recommend one if it makes your life easy and more efficient.

As kismet would have it, I happened to be walking down the street today (in China) and two twenty something doucheclowns roar up in a Lamborghini Aventador (I had to look it up), park, flip the doors up, get out, check themselves out in the reflection of said Aventador, flip the doors down, then swagger into the Brompton folding bike store, take a Brompton out for a test ride, then purchase said Brompton. You cannot make this shit up.

Now as I write this I'm kicking myself for not sticking around long enough to answer the question that has been bugging me since I was a kid: can you fit a Brompton folding bike into a Lamborghini? My money is on no.

So what have we learned from this? Does this mean Bromptons cool or does it make them the opposite of cool?

Aside from the smaller wheels (as was already mentioned) they can make good sense if you're riding the train.

Folders tend to be a bit twitchy, but otherwise handle well. Avoid the single speeds, as standing to put some weight in the pedals is really sketchy.

Sorry was MIA on vacay

that is priceless. Those filthy rich Chinese douches. I'm a poor Chinese man and will be even more so shortly so Bromptons are stupid money. Would rather have a bike that I can abuse in the city without worry.

Where in China? Pleasure? Work?

I picked up a Dahon Jack. 7 speed. 26" folder.

I want to park my car west of the gwb and if some reason the gwb is closed due to whatever goodness reason then I would have to hop on some public trans (they dont allow non folders during peak) get around and back to my car. How likely/often does that happen in the middle of the day??? I'm paranoid my car will be towed overnight if it was stranded

Also, so I can fit folder in dads hybrid once or twice a week?

It is pretty quick. 5sec flat fold. Albeit some tiny play in hinge but can't feel when riding. No bars or drop post non sense. Conducter wanted to kick me off the train yesterday because he though it was a non folder. 26er lives.

It almost never randomly closes during the day unless there is some "police activity" (someone jumped). They will close it last minute in the morning if the weather is crappy. Usually not for rain, but freezing rain/snow. Sign up for the pedestrian crossing alerts on the PA website so you don't show up to a locked gate.

Cool thanks! I'll sign up. About what time is last minute if they decide to close?

I'll try to do 2-3 days a week but ill also use the folder on days I went tocatch some zzzz's on the coach bus and they allow folders.

The walkways are supposed to open at 6am and I'm pretty sure I've gotten alerts close to 5:45. Not a huge deal if your commute will be later, but it can throw a wrench in the plans if you're already on the way.

Is a good idea to have a plan B if you're planning on attempting a ride in during qustionable weather.
