Chimney Rock CX practice (wednesdays)

hope to make it next week. after the clinic last weekend, i need to do a little more homework before i come make a mistake and end up losing some front teeth on a barrier 😱

Our barriers are made of PVC and are designed to break apart on impact. You can literally crash right into them at 30mph and they'll just collapse. No broken teeth😀

So these are bunny hoppable with no real consequence?

Anyone have a picture of/plans for the DIY PVC barriers mentioned above?

I'm thinking of following this tutorial to set up some barriers for local practice - i.e. jumping on and off my bike in my front yard LIKE A BOSS. 😎

Jim laid out the details somewhere, but I don't remember where.

A. Yes this post is essentially useless
B. I did actually search for it but couldn't find it

I did actually lay it out somewhere. More than likely in my blog somewhere, good luck finding that!!

I did find a pic of them though. Kinda self-explanatory if you look at it. Each one is 5 pieces. The 2 feet. 2 "L" things that go on top of the feet and connects onto the main cross bar. The connectors are glued except for the spots they go together.

Thanks Jim! I'm guessing that if I wanted to make it more portable I could leave the joins on the main cross bar unglued?

Thanks for coming out!! We had a pretty good turn-out yesterday, I hope everyone was able to learn something and had (fun). Painful, hard, evil fun😀

See everyone next week!!

I'm a little late on this one, you probably have them built already.

Here's the material list for the barriers I made. At Home Cheapo they cost about 30 bucks.
3-10' lengths of 2 inch PVC pipe (schedule 40, what ever the hell that means)
4-2 inch Tee's
4-2 inch 90's
8-2 inch end caps (not needed but I thought Jim V's looked more professional)
My barriers are 8'0" long and 15 3/4 inches tall (UCI Rules) All the fittings are glued. Space them 13 feet apart (UCI rules again) 😀

That was certainly an experience last night. I had one lap of "fun" when I got to try it on a cross bike. The rest of the time I felt like I was slugging through sand on the mtb 😉 Good workout and as I feared I'll be back for more 🙂

Good job posting that Ben, I suspect that will help with the turnout as it looks like a fun little loop.

For those who would like to see what is going on during these practices, I captured some of the fun on video. Here is the first few minutes of our first 20minute interval.

Cool video Ben! The course looks fun, Jim is evil for putting a set of barriers on a run up! Nice to see Stacey Barbossa there. There is so much single track, I wonder why not loop a few sections in?

Yes.. that was very evil. plus the grass was petty high so it was like riding in sand.. Heart rate was up to pinned in about 15 seconds... 😀

As for the singletrack, its pretty rocky in that section of the park. Although... I may have an idea I'll talk to Jim about. It probably wont work.. but we'll see!!

The sections of singletrack right in that area are a little too rough for cross bikes. When I go there to do solo cross workouts, I use the baseball fields and that section of singletrack that runs along Gilbride to extend the course. Running a pack through there at race-pace isn't such a good idea though😉

Thanks for sharing Ben!!

You are not going to see grass shorter than that in a race. Last week it was twice as long and wet. The grass often gets matted down during the races. Later racers get a small benefit from that.
