Chimney Rock Conditions

It would have had to have been a magical elf indeed. I tried riding my 4.6” studs around my property this afternoon and even as low as 5 PSI it was almost impossible to ascend5psi anything but the gentlest grade. The snow was simply too slippery and soft, no float and no base to dig in to.

I’ve got an excuse to be near Six Mile tomorrow and I think that’s going to be a much better bet.
5psi is way to high.

Chimney Rock is fatbikeable… at least red and white. Some tracks in blue but didn’t attempt it.

Rode red and blue this afternoon, both are rideable, red is better. Fresh snow is easier to ride in places than that which has been disturbed. Ice still hides beneath some sections so be careful.

Hit up red and blue this am. Less ice than a few weeks ago but still slippery enough in places to warrant walking the bike across. Never crashed but had some pucker moments. Kept the bike upright on the smooth stuff and stayed off the front brake and actually managed to keep it shiny side up this time. Yay me. Off the ice I had no issues finding grip despite every rock and root looking like it was sugar glazed.

Black ice patches in Newman's.

The off camber turn on red near the lot is looking better.

Worse part of upper blue. I didn't even attempt the swampy parts of lower blue. Must be a mess.

Most of the other parts of blue i traversed were decent.

Yellow tape across the entrance to white. Did not venture across so no clue as to why.

@CNJRider maybe White was closed off because they're worried about conditions near the old quarry/mine? That's a helluva tumble over there.
Could be. This would be a first since I have biked and hiked CR in all sorts of snowy and icy condtions and never saw white cordoned off. Could be some construction work happening too. Part of black has been closed lately for that reason.

Only one way to find out…

It’s been broken up right before the bridge pretty much since Ida, bikes seem ok on it but maybe fixing for the hikers.

Where’s the old quarry/mine? Are there any artifacts of it?

Early this afternoon was pretty good. White was starting to thaw and get mushy in spots. Some of the ice rivers on orange were treacherous even off the bike.

Finished with a climb up the Logan fire road which remains very interesting in its post-Ida state.

The area at the end of Quarry Lane, to north of the fancy bridge over the wet area.
The single track which falls off to both sides (coney island), some are wet, some are dry

Betting it is a total mess at these temps. Sunday morning at dawn-ish may be ok if it dips into the 20s.

I went today just before sunset. It’s muddy in places but not too bad, better than late fall was by a wide margin. The leaves act as a sort of mud binder.

The early smells of spring - thawing dirt, rotting wood, mycelium - combined with sun and warm temperatures substantially add to the joy of the experience.

Definitely still better off on a fat bike, which seems to be the case for three out of four seasons at CR.

Going back tomorrow for sure.

Today was worse than yesterday. I did blue to white to black to orange to Logan fire road.

Based on todays experience, tomorrow I will do more of upper blue and red sections and skip white and black. Orange is good. I’ll try yellow too.

Couple inches of snow sticking to the ground this morning. Conditions should be perfect. I'll check back in to confirm when I return.

Definitely gonna be a squishy shithole. It's too warm.
Blue and red were damn near perfect except for a few spots on lower blue.

It’s not gonna stay this way though as it is warming up.
