Cars, it's electric! Do Do Do

this here is the big holdup for electric car takeover (no, im not even a little bit of a fan of electric but thats beside the point right now). The range vs recharge time is just not there for the general population to convert at this point. I would say if you can get a range of 300 miles (roughly a tank of gas in most cars these days) and recharge in under 10 minutes (this is generous, since i can fill the tank on my truck in 4 and its double the size of most cars) and people will start looking, as long as it doesnt cost them a bunch more.

also keep in mind the electric grid in this country couldnt handle that many cars all being charged at once, hell some places get rolling brownouts/blackouts when the a/c goes on in the summertime, imagine that kind of draw but all year round, yea some MAJOR improvements to infrastructure need to be made before electric can takeover. 10 -15 years min, they will of course slowly gain market share in that time.

That said performance enthusiasts are unlikely to be on the early edge of converting bc part of the draw to cars is the sound and driving dynamics, and electric cars offer no (natural) sound and a completely different driving dynamic (no need to shift gears ect).
how often do you drive 300+ miles a day... and if you do, is a 30 minute lunch stop unreasonable? is it perfect right now, but KT will be the only time this year when I wouldn't be able to recharge at the destination or at my own house overnight.

Well that would be every state
Seriously, why none in nj with such dense population and so many Teslas? Seems odd

apparently it is the electric co lobby ?

they charge you for how long you are tethered, not how much electricity used!

When I'm commuting i do 130 miles a day. Most trips i take are over 300 miles ( before pandemic this was 5 or 6 trips a year between work and personal), I do drive straight through generally. Which car has a real world range of 200+ miles (rated ranges are a load ofncrap just like mpg numbers). Also show me an electric car that recharges in 30 minutes. (Fully not this up to 60% crap)

I will also note that converting people is about providing a familiar experience, not one thats `good enough`. People want what they know, not a change of procedure( at least not immediately or forced). People will of course convert to charging every night over time, as long as te grid infrastructure cathces up to handle it.

Also iv gotten spoiled since I have closer to 600 miles driving range in my current daily driver.

Wait why does range matter with a gas car? Just seems like an elaborate way of saying fill up cost a fortune.

Change is hard I get it and early adopters pay a premium to get less but the cons of electric grow smaller by the year. Those late to adapt personally won't risk much aside for increased depreciation and w.e. the price of gas is, possiblity a carbon tax in the future.

It really doesn't, and thats the point, it's something people are now needing to think about with electric, I ended up with it by chance since I bought a floor model. It sure is nice to only fill up once a weeknwith my commute tho

Idk if you need to hear this but fuck that commute it's like driving to Albany

Since my wife got the model y, my minivan hardly ever gets used, unless we're going on a trip with the two kids and the in-laws. There's superchargers up and down the turnpike, and I've seen them popping up at Wawa all over south jersey lately. They're at some malls and other shopping centers as well. The hospital my wife works at has a level 2 charger, way slower than the supercharger and the home charger, but fills the tank over her shift so we hardly ever pay for electricity to fill it. There's slow chargers at the supermarkets we go to as well, but we're hardly ever there long enough for a good fill on the free stuff, but park there anyway because it's just as close as the handicapped spots. Yesterday we drove from sicklerville NJ to Philly then south Amboy then Bayonne, then new Brunswick, then a ten minute stop at Wawa in maple shade for a drink and quick charge, and finally back to sicklerville. Battery was at 95% when we left in the morning and 30% when we got back. Range hasn't been an issue in the 10k miles we've had it, and we've had probably a 95% reduction in the amount we would've paid in gas.
I love the driving dynamics, it accelerates so smoothly and just takes off. I hardly ever use the brake pedal. Take your foot off the gas and the regenerative braking slows you down pretty quickly.
We have a 4 year old and a 2 year old. If both car seats were rear facing, you might be able to squeeze a person in the middle fairly comfortably. We have one seat forward facing and the other rear. I've sat in the middle for a 20 minute drive when we had to pick up my mil. It was not comfortable at all. They make a 3 row version, but I've never seen it in person. I can't imagine it would be all that useful if you are going to have two car seats in the middle because it'd be near impossible to actually get back there.
You don't pay sales tax and we just made the $5k rebate program that was offered in NJ (I believe it's coming back, but haven't heard anything about it yet). So that saved us about 8k off the price (sticker was just over $54k).
I absolutely loved that there's no haggling with the dealership, I've always hated that part of car buying. I also love that you don't have to pay extra for every little option, or have to upgrade to the next trim level to get certain things. You pick the range/performance, and everything else is the same. I'll likely never buy another ICE car.

Some drives just would not work with an EV yet. I drive once a week to the Catskills to ski for the day. There are only a few stations near Hunter and nothing close to Plattekill or Belleayre. The ones that exist have 2 or 3 outlets. Seems like the chances of sitting around and waiting for a charge would be highly probable especially if using heat reduces range. I'll stick to my 32 gallon tank for a while.

🤣🤣🤣🤣
Real truck please, that's a hatchback good for 50 mile range in reality.
Yeah, I'm not ready to accept that towing my boat a normal 4 hour ride is now a 2 day "journey" with that shiny new Ford. That truck can go Frunk itself.

Although, perhaps I'm seeing this wrong. Perhaps I need two trucks and thats what the masses must be telling me. I'll have an electric truck to feel good about myself and conform because that's what we do these days...plus take the recycling down or pickup bulk paper towels and TP if the next big one hits. Plus I'll also have real truck to pull my boat and do the real shit in a timely fashion with the little amount of time I'm left with when I'm not working.

My carbon footprint will be fabulous. PS Not taking my lunch break stalking charging stations lol.

You’ll never get it…

I once drove my 2003 VW TDI wagon from Chicago to the Delaware River. I would have tried to make it home, but little kids sleeping in the car.

You guys are a little crazy with the range anxiety. I can count on one hand the amount of times I've actually used a supercharger in 10k miles. And of those times, only once was it actually needed, and it was a 10 minute stop after 4 hours of driving. Only reason I stop at them is to use up the free 1000 miles before the 6 month expiration, lol.
In 10k miles, how long have you spent at gas stations? I've spent 10 minutes at a charger in that time. It's a actually quite liberating not having to stop for gas. I can't stand when my Odyssey is low on gas anymore, I hate it. Such a waste of time.

Never thought of that and my dumb ass goes to Costco for gas at 9pm to avoid lines

And it's way cheaper. Even if you solely use superchargers, which cost twice as much as it does when you charge from home, it still costs half as much as it would in an ICE car.
