carbon wheels on a hardtail??

Also being on the Onyx train. Well worth the investment.
You Onyx guys haven't been going through bearings? I had a pair back when they first started making MTB hubs and I was less than impressed with the machining quality and overall finish when I received them but kept them anyway. They rode great and that instant engagement is the bees knees but I was really dissapointed in how often I found myself needing to replace the bearings. Maybe I got a bum set or maybe they have made some improvements along the way?

Im assuming you were checking the space adjustment every now and again? Like you i had them early and now im on my second set. No problems at all. Butter smooth down the trail.

Got a pair of lightbicycle hoops on my SIR9 . Rides fine

What do you have?

I really have no idea, the internal i think is 23 or 24mm . I got them used from the boards. got them laced to a pair of older dt swiss 240 hubs. Been riding them for at least 4 years now . Stephens , Allamuchy etc no issues.

Thanks. This thread makes me want to buy carbon wheels for my hardtail!!

Anyone running berd spokes? They seem like they'd be ideal on a hardtail and I would have gone that route if they weren't so expensive, but I couldn't justify it....
I still haven’t actually seen these out in the wild. They look cool though.

They are very interesting but not an early adapter move for me. I’m interested to hear some feedback.

@jimvreeland didnt you build a set with berd spokes? Are they much different to work with than traditional spokes?

I'm Berd curious also. I wonder if all you need to do is buy their "spokes" and be able to lace them up to existing hubs and rims or you'll need a Berd specific hub.

I would love to build a set of Berd-spoked wheels! I would like to hear some real world experience before investing the time and money though. I believe you need to chamfer and polish the hub spoke holes to prep for Berd.

Check this out - not just white or black.

I know of one person that has them. He raced on them last season and was really pleased. As far as I know he isn't on the forum.

I've heard them brought up in podcasts a handful of times with praise and they seem well reviewed on the interwebs.

Watching videos of people lacing them looks like a PITA but maybe it isn't that bad if you've built enough wheels?

You need bird hubs, the spokes have a loop on them at the hub. And they stretch when you lace a wheel.

Steve fromHardtail party on YouTube loves them, but he said there like $500 for the spokes for a wheelset.

So what hub manufacturers are on board with making Berd hubs? $500 is a lot for spokes but if you already have a set of wheels you can upgrade then the additional cost for an awesome wheelset isn't that bad.

Not correct - this taken directly from the Berd Spoke web site:

Berd spokes work with all J-bend and most straightpull hubs. The spoke is connected to the hub by pulling the loop through the hub hole and inserting a rod into the loop. Once this is done, the spoke cannot pull back through the hub hole.

Hmm... if you want to keep your existing J-bend hubs and don't want to deal with having to ream and buff each hole correctly, I wonder if they'll make a hook that fits in the J-bend holes so all you need to do is put the hooks in each hole on the hub to provide an anker point for each spoke.

Berd recommends only using 16 mm Double Square Sapim Secure Lock Nipples. If you do not use nipples without a mechanical locking mechanism, they say to apply Loctite 242 to the spoke threads prior to building, or apply Loctite 290 to the spoke/nipple interface after building.

I've never used, or needed, mechanically locking nipples.
