Soccer mom car?

My 13 year old is working as a referee for ref soccer now since basketball is canceled And saw this in the parking lot. Big tire/wheel combo.

Then it’s like my phone knew I was looking at a BMW cause this popped up for sale at a Kia dealer ?

Hammer price $58,500 - wild. I drooled over these type R's in high school, still do.
Though I’ve never driven one they do have quite the following for good reason I’m sure. However stylistically I always thought the front end was a little odd. I think the headlights just look too diminutive. Maybe it’s just me.

I don’t understand the nostalgia for these 90’s fwd cars. I suspect the people who buy them must have never owned one. If you have a fetish for fwd performance cars, why not take that $60k and go get a new Civic Type-R or GTI?

This R230 has been abandoned at work for the past 2 years, maybe 3... Left side window has been ¼ open. I been tempted to find out if I could buy this from the client and drop an LS7 motor in it 🤔. But so far they cannot reach the owner. Definitely the body harness is done and I don't know if the engine turns... And to be that low there must be something wrong with the suspension since it has the ABC suspension (Active Body Control) Hydraulic which uses Pentosin fluid. It can be the perfect project car if I get my hands on it. This car used to be sold for $120k

IDK the same reason why people spend big dollars on old Camaro and Mustangs kinda what you grew up with I guess. I actually like and miss my '99 Civic SI better than my current 2017 WRX sometimes. The NA engine sounded amazing and was so much more responsive than the turbo in the WRX even though it has half the HP. They're cheap, fun and simple to work on too, a set of decent coilovers, swap the front upper control arms for more caster, and add a heavier rear sway bar, reduce the rear toe in a bit and the handling is great and predictable. Add a limited slip diff, some stiffer control arm bushings and they handle even better. Even stock the SI was pretty fun to drive though no ABS, TC, DSC, etc. to get in the way just pure driving. The 15"-16" tires, wheels and brake parts you usually run on them are cheap if you track a lot. I can't imagine what a set of the 20" DOT track tires and wheels for the Civic Type R would cost compared to the 16's of the SI.

So I understand the nostalgia but I agree though and wouldn't pay almost 60k for one that's for sure!

Crappy old pic of my '96 EK Civic I had so much fun building and AutoX'n this thing until some lady in a Jeep used it instead of her brakes to stop one day totaling it 🙁

Not my thing either but the guy who won the auction is collecting that car, not buying daily transportation.

The headlights are one of the best parts and defining factors of the car, at least in the USDM/UK model. You see that front end and you know its a teg.
The JDM model had different headlights, but sometimes they could look boring. The headlights were very close to that of an Accord.

These ITR's were pure driving machines. No frills, tuned suspension, stiffer chassis from the factory, and an engine that produced more than 100 hp per liter. They were FUN. They made you want to drive. I've had the pleasure of driving a couple...definitely an awesome experience. Is it worth $60k? Well I guess to that buyer it is, lol.

not sure about that BAT price, but jeez, here is one on ebay for 15k

I get the Type R values to some extent...there were only ~3800 that ever came to the US....but you can get a gsr for peanuts and it has 15 less horsepower....My roommate had a 2000 GSR that I drove alot...I know people loved these cars but I never got it.......Slow as balls...I remember having to power shift it to get it to run a 16.0 up at island one night. My 318 powered 4x4 93 dodge dakota was just as fast. ...for a car that was almost 25k in those days, i was never impressed.

That said, a car being great has 0 to do with a car being valuable....As @FastFreddy correctly pointed out. People spend fortunes on VW buses which are still the worst vehicles ever made next to the bug. Nostalgia is a powerful thing

My buddy also had a GSR with Mugen headers, exhaust, coil over suspension. The peaky engine was always the selling point, but it was attached to fwd, which sucks. Fwd sucks, period. RWD and AWD is better. Yes, I currently drive a fwd GTI, which is as good a fwd platform as there is, but I grew up driving RWD. If you’re into the whole Honda peaky sport-bike-motor-in a car thing, why not take your $60k and try to hunt down an S2000? At least that motor is attached to a real chassis. Even better, buy a beater Miata and drop the old 4.6 Mustang motor in? Fits like a glove.
