Book of Paul H

No noob uses the big ring unless you are a monster. Are you a monster @C8N? The big ring is a bashguard on the mtb. Maybe you should get a bashguard although it is frowned upon by some.
Definitely not a monster... I ride road on my mtb to/from HM and its only occasionally I am on the big ring when I have those moments when I try to break PR on strava. 🙂

this is so tru. had a 3x and there were few teeth left on the big ring. dropped the bike off for general check-up and the tech replaced it!!!!

Went to the garage last night to convert the Walgoose to 8spd.
I managed to undo the striped bolt on the shifter via the caveman method, took off the chain and rd and replaced them with the 8 spd stuff. Now it's time to do the cassette... but it looks different. The cassette removal tool doesn't fit. I google... and what the hell is a freewheel? Argh! Do I put back the 7spd or get a used rear wheel?

I was thinking about what I can either sell or trade. Are these worth anything?

Mavic CXP22 wheels. The rear was bent that I wrenched back to shape.
Shimano SLX 3x front derailleur
Shimano Acera 9spd rear derailleur
Giant Connect composite seat post with broken... err... cut clamps because the bolt got frozen. Was trying to save the seat.

A 7 speed hub won't fit an 8 speed cassette. 8/9/10 are the ones that work with one another, with the use of spacers in some cases. In my opinion, I don't think I'd take a Walmart bike on singletrack so it's not worth a wheel upgrade. The Giant was worth throwing a bit into it to keep it riding.

It's not a cassette based wheel. Your hub is threaded and the whole "cassette" (i.e. freewheel) screws on into the hub. I think they are different depending on what kind of freewheel is on it:

Rather than get the tool, bring it to the bike shop to get it removed. Hopefully they don't laugh at you.

Your 8 speed cassette won't fit in that hub. I would convert the walgoose to singlespeed (you can put a BMX SS freewheel on it). If you are daring make it a suicide fixed cog. Look it up!

the chain line can get really wacky with freewheel hubs, I tried that with Suntour Sprint hubs for a fixie a few year ago I have a number of freewheel keys, what brand is yours? also what's the crank you're using, the spindle length and position will also determine whether you'll have sufficient alignment

I am thinking about rebuilding the wheel to accept a cassette. Prolly cheaper to buy a used 26 wheel but heck... its all about the wrenching and learning right?

Also... I busted the original 7 spd shifter. 🙁

spec out the hubs and make sure you can reuse the spokes, spokes are fairly expensive when purchased loose
good luck, I'm terrible at building wheels, without a dishing tool and tensioner they never come out well for me

I will probably end up throwing the wheel into the thrash and buying a used one. Lol

Just adopted a 2001 Santa Cruz Superlight and picking her up on Saturday. Reading up on converting her to a 650b. I think it will be a fun project over the winter and get her ready for spring. 🙂

Gonna need a fork, headset and crank to start things off.

Picked up the Superlight this morning.
Pulled off the rear wheel from the Talon and its a tight fit on the Superlight. The rear brace/bracket and the v brakes had to be removed and I don't think it can go any wider than a 2.1 tire.... but I think it is a workable 650b conversion. Yay!

Going to pull the rest of the stuff off the Talon today and see it they fit on the Superlight. Also gotta go to Home Depot to buy some nylon washers to reduce compression on the rear shocks.

btw.... ummm... any reason/s why I shouldn't be using an electric impact gun? Freakin cassette is stuck in there pretty good.

Broke my chain tool trying to take off the cassette.....🙁

Do you mean chainwhip?

I didn't think it was possible to break.

I would try leverage.

If you have a vice you could try it that way.
