Blauvelt Conditions

We had six volunteers out today. The span is back in place and a cracked joist was repaired further down the boardwalk.

Looks great but shouldn’t it have a draw bridge option for the giant snapping turtles that live in the creek? I guess they can crawl over it but that may require a sign like “ giant snapping turtle xing”….🤓
 
I ride Blauvelt quite regularly. Generally you should wait two sometimes three days after a rain storm. It gets very muddy and could only imagine its current condition. The soil there is very prone to NOT draining water well…
 
I was there today, the heavy rains followed by wind was tough on the dead trees. There is a big fall right by the main parking lot(40 footer). I wasn’t able to mark the trees location down but there were at least 4 others. If I get a chance this week I will see what I can do.

FYI…
Sterling Forest now allows class-1 e-bikes thanks to Palisades MTB’s efforts. You can check that off your “Troll List”.

To my knowledge sterling is the only trail system in New York State that e bikes are allowed, so kudos to the team.

That’s incorrect. The entire park system policy has been overhauled. Each park is independently updating their policy based on the type of trails and trail conditions. If you get involved and become a member of Palisades MTB, your membership will go towards these advocacy efforts and you’ll be kept in the loop as to what’s happening around you.

Can you give me general location and tree diameter? I may be able get in there today, before the snow comes.
 
FYI, not sure whats going on but someone drove a skid steer through and put up lots of marker stakes. Did the park get sold for development?

No. As you may know, Blauvelt State Park is a historical area that was once a military base. The work being done is being facilitated by the army corp of engineers and they’re removing unexploded ordnances and other buried objects.
This is actually good news since Palisades MTB has been asked by the park managers to begin looking at potential options for mountain bike trails and creating a comprehensive plan to expand and improve the existing network. Please consider joining PMTB.

Thread 'Munitions Response at Blauvelt Firing Range'

100 years after it ceased to be a firing range our Government has decided to figure out if there are any nasties lying around in the park. Apparently they played with grenades up there in addition to just shooting targets. A few years ago while taking soil samples they found something to cause concern.

Currently there is a small crew in the park mapping/surveying the area. They are cutting their way thru the undergrowth with a skid steer mounted brush hog. There’s some infringement onto the bike trails, especially near the Long Path at the 600yd target wall.
