Biscotti Madness

I may need to go away from Accelerade because it's really hard for me to drink a bottle of Accelerade an hour, at 120 calories my stomach just doesn't like that and I already mix it half strength. I do have this new Accelerade Hydro so I may give that a shot at 60 calories a scoop or Heed which worked much better for me yesterday at 100 calories a bottle. I may also just need to go straight water after 4-ish hours.

I drink the Accelerade Hydro Lemonade, and it is much easier on my stomach than the regular Accelerade. I have a slight problem with lactose though and that may be the cause of my problems...

I also note that I sweat much less than ever before, by a considerable margin. I ran into Leo at mile 115 and he was soaked with sweat.

I'm a horrible comparison when it comes to this, I sweat something fierce. Even when I was in the best shape of my life and wrestling at the state tournaments people would get disgusted trying to touch me during the match. I'm just a sweaty guy no matter how you look at it 😛.

On a side note, I might steal some of your eating ideas since I still stuck on the bike, anything past 60 miles and I start to feel the effects of not really eating. Same thing happened to me on this ride, but it was short enough that I could just muscle through the last bit. My biggest hurdle is water, I never plan out stops so I only have what I take which is almost not enough. I've done a few 80 milers earlier this year with zero food with me thinking I can sustain off gatorade and such.....:drooling: wrong. I really need to sit down and figure out some bike nutrition for shizzy.

that's funny about the real food thing. on that single 50 miler i did, at the two hour mark i really felt like i needed something solid and ate a clif bar...only to have it gum up on me completely. i really like the gels a lot, so much so i tried making my own, which turned out to be just "ok". certainly not the taste, texture or flavor profile of the mass produced stuff but hey, it was just v1.

but your point, about nutrition, is something that i've figured out is REALLY important even on shorter rides like i do mostly, in the 30-40 mile range. i find that if i sip water and gatorade ever 10 minutes (alternately) i don't crap, i don't dehydrate and my legs protest FAR less when i want to hammer up hills. in the past i would travel with just water where as now if i'm going out for two hours, i always go with some gatorade for the calories.

See that's the odd thing this year. I used to sweat like you. I mean, I'd come home after a ride and pools of sweat would literally form on the kitchen floor. Suddenly this year it's just gone. I'm sure I'll be a mess again once the temps ride but now I'm just not sweating like I used to. I used to play basketball a lot and I was the guy who was drenched head to toe and disgusting to guard.

I've gone through the roll-your-own, and all liquid calories, and endurolytes, and just about anything you can think of. I even bought plain maltodextrin when I was rolling up my own mixes for a while. After all this time all it seems that solid food was the answer I was looking for. Some people can do all liquid calories. I cannot.

If you eat something and you feel like spitting it out, you're more than likely dehydrated. At least IME that's what's going on. I'm just finally getting experienced enough to see what the signs are and not ignore them like I used to. If something you've eaten 50 times suddenly tastes like ass, you need to correct it ASAP because you're about to go down in a ball of flames.

Though Norm's management of WBU's has clearly become legendary, what impresses me is Norm's motivation & dedication to put in this much seat time to begin with.

Well done, Norm.

Totally agree, not looking to diminish the accomplishment an iota. I'm jealous of everything about Norm now. I'm having shirts made that say "Be like Norm".
Hey with all this Norm talk everyone is doing can we can start a thread to discuss Norm that doesn't send his biscotti thread off topic?.😀
Of course I am serious.

Day off yesterday, recovery day #2.

Moderate hour at LM today, recovery day #3:
http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/8200208

In honor of Spencer I rode the Spencemobile on today's ride. Damn that bike is fast. It needs tubeless tires though as that scandium is a tad rough. But the thing climbs like a monster.

Spent 6 hours at the shop giving the race Niner a bit of a facelift. Replaced the seals on the fork, new front and rear derailleurs (SRAM) as well as shifters and cables, etc. New brakes, Avid Elixers. New front tire, just put the same thing on (Toro). Bought some Clif bars and gloves. Burned a barge full of MUBs by spending 6 hours there. But the bike is like new again. Going to just take it to LM again tomorrow for a quick hour again, recovery day #4.

Also put a deposit down on a Super 6. I can't help myself.

You will love the sram stuff. The elixir brakes pretty much crap on anything else out there for an xc bike, only thing that comes close is the new XT's.

wow, six hours? jeez.

ok, so what time are you going to LM? heading there myself...not like i'll see you for anymore time than in the parking lot saying hi.

oh, and congrats on the c-dale. Schweeeet!

I was out at like 7:30 for a quick hour:
http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/8210802

I guess my recovery/rest pace is 9.5 because that's 2 days in a row with the same average speed.

So the bike is like new. New drivetrain, derailleurs, and shifters turn this from a sluggish shifting bike to a crisp shifting bike. The brakes are a fantastic upgrade. Modulation, power, no noise, no ghosting. Wonderful. New front Toro hooks up fantastically. I felt really great out there today, the bike shifted and handled excellently.

Major thanks to Chris at Halter's who spent damn near 6 hours giving this an overhaul and really sweating the details yesterday. I'll try to do him and the bike justice this Sunday.

Off day tomorrow then something hard Friday as a lead-in for Sunday's race at Tymor. Off Saturday, more than likely.

Wait until they break-in and they feel even better. Although I have had some noise problems with the rear but have not taken the time to figure it out. Enjoy....

Day off today, rest day #5. I'm starting to feel a bit sluggish which seems to be a pattern for me on these rest weeks. Tomorrow I hope to hit it fairly hard, in the 2-3 hour realm, tempo ride. Weather looks to be iffy so I'll do a road ride. In all the week should be 3-to-1 mountain-to-road. Also plan to pick up Chuck's Mavic wheels tomorrow. Not sure what I'm even going to do with them, TBH. But I'm just taking good deals where I see them.

Weight is sliding down again, which is good. Hoping to be around 170 for the theoretical 24 HoA.

Rest week ended with a bang today:
http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/8225584

58+ miles, under 3 hours, 19.8 average. I did this 2 weeks ago on the Friday before the Wawayanda race and ended up with an 18.8 average. I didn't feel amazing out there but I rode well. I also did not drop off in the 3rd hour which is a bonus, as that was something I noticed clearly last time.

2 weeks ago my hour splits were:

19.2
19.0
18.8

Today they were:

19.8
19.7
19.8

I was actually at 19.9 before the up-and-over hill to get back home, where I dialed it back and soft pedaled to cool off for a few minutes to get home.

I tried Accelerade Hydro today and I could almost immediately tell it had fake sweetener in it. In the last 30 minutes of the ride my stomach started to complain. I think this experiment will be a short one. I really don't like the fake sweeteners and at upper tempo pace little things like that are going to amplify and blow out your gut.

I did try another Accel Gel, raspberry cream, and once again it rocks. Also, still loving Maple Nut Clif bars. Hard to believe I've eaten so many and still like them so much.

Off tomorrow and Tymor Sunday, rain or shine.
