Best tires for grip?

I have read that super knobby tires are great for gripping the trails and also slow your speed down giving a beginner mountain biker more confidence. Is this true? If so can you give some brand of tires that will give superior grip. Thanks for all of your info.

Tire choice depends on where you ride and what type or riding you do.

Kenda Nevegal tires are basically standard in the biking world and a lot of bikes and bikers choose these tires for their block pattern and grip. If you already have a bike and just starting to bike on the trails, dont swap the tires, just ride the bike till your tires have no grip and then swap em out.

I had WTB Weirwolf 2.1 front and rear on a 26er SS last summer and they were great, awesome grip, and very durable. They were cheap too I think I got them for $20 from pricepoint at the time.

panaracer fire x/c. 2.1s. that should do the trick for cheap.

if you don't mind dropping more cash on a set of tires go with nevegals.

Velociraptors 2.1 - great tire for grip and price - I recently picked up a set for $14.99 (wire bead) at Wheelworld.

If you're a gram weenie then you'ld have to spring more for kevlar bead.
