Bend Oregon

Hi Folks,
I have no posted on mtbnj in ages and ages because I have been doing mostly road triathlons. Too much time in my aerobars I guess, but I had to come on and give quick trip report about Bend Oregon.

Chris and I came out for two weeks to check the area out as a possible place for relocation. What started out as a recon trip has morphed into a mt biking trip. The riding here is incredible.

From where are staying in town, we can be on the trails in about 2 miles. They have a system right out or town that links close to 100 miles of trails in the Deschutes National Forest. And the trails.....so well thought out and so fun. It has a bit of everything. Lots of fun swoopy trails, plenty of climbing, enough techy stuff to keep you honest. There is a trail called the Whoops Trail that runs in the downhill direction only that is like a downhill pump track with banked corners. It ties in with another trail to give a 7 mile downhill screamer.

We hooked up with a shop called Web Cyclery. they only carry 29er's and you can rent a top end bike for 50 dollars for 24 hours. The "bike guy" told us yesterday how to hook up tomorrow's ride to finish with a 12 mile downhill. Yee Ha! I think I am spoiled for life.

The town of Bend is designed with riders in mind. There is bike path, trail or lane every where you go. Even the highway has a bike lane. Bike racks all over town, and everybody and I mean everybody rides. The climate is so dry that you can cruise to town and not have to worry about getting overly sweaty.

We have a few days left and one more ride coming up. I will bring my camera out tomorrow and get some pictures. If you are looking for a bike destination. Put this on your list. You could bring the family and everyone will be happy. Plenty of family stuff to do, great downtown area, great shopping and restaurants. Did I mention there are 12 Brew Pubs in town? Trail running, fishing, tubing, rafting...and on and on....

Bend is stupid. The people from there are stupid.

Juniper trees, sage brush, pumice, summer forest fires. Ick!

😀

Ruth!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love Bend...my friend's parents have a home there and I spent some time gawking over the geology there...

We actually considered Bend for our mtb honeymoon...it was in our top #3 picks.

Enjoy!!!!!!!

Those locals aren't from Bend is the irony in that.

In high school less than 10% of us were natives. Most were transplanted Californians.

🙁 for me 🙂 for you. It has been a long time and I hope you 2 are doing well (duh). You will be be missed at the DH40...

No, we met Zach and Shanon.Great guys. We are going up to swampy lake tomorrow, via Ben's and Skyliner.

Cool. Don't know what Bens is. Skyliner used to have a rope tow years ago and was the coolest snow tubing place.

Move there and when I come down from Portland to visit mom, we can explore that Mecca together.

Well, we wrapped up our mt biking with 35 miles yesterday giving us just about 100 miles for the week. I just can't say enough good stuff. Put it on your list. I don't think we saw another person for 20 miles, and then a total of about 10 on the way out. On a Sunday morning...lots of space to ride!! It reminded me how much I love mt biking. Perhaps there will be a return to Xterra next year.

The trip home starts tomorrow where it is back to flat roads and aerobars for the rest of the season.

As if I needed more convincing. Usually take a bike trip to Pisgah NC every Thanksgiving. Is this place rideable so late in the season?
If so, and I did YouTube that Whoops trail, makes Ridgeline look like a warm-up, I'm switching plans.

I wouldn't plan on early...only as a last minute thing and snow is coming late.
On TG it could be frozen and fast goodness or a couple feet of snow on the ground. It is a crap shoot...and that is the trails immediately around Bend. The higher elevations towards Bachelor, etc, you're pretty much guaranteed to have snow. Well except in those freak low/no snow years.

It will be cold. Like Jan-Feb NJ cold or colder.

Bend is only 20-ish miles from Mt Bachelor (an out west mountain, not the hills y'all call mountains out here). Elevations are 3200-3300 ft and UP.

With all the weather wackiness these days, who knows what could happen.

When I used to go home to visit with bike in tow, I thought June was the sweet spot. Warm, but not too warm and cool crisp mountain air mornings to ride in. And, it is usually before the fire season. Bend summers are spectacular...but it is high desert and very arid...one dumbass in the woods or a lightening storm can really lite things up. Not too unusual to have some smokey days around Bend mid to late Summer.
