Backpain: Is this the end of the season for me?

I decided to go riding around town with the kids (10, 8 and 4) this morning. We went to our Middle School parking lot where I decided to show the younger two (boys) how to negotiate the tiny difference of elevation between sidewalk and asphalt. About the 13th time going up and down I felt a sharp pain in my mid to lower back as soon as I yanked on the handlebars.

The pain went away but a tingling persisted. We went to Borders in the afternoon where I spent a lot of time on my feet running after my youngest. This evening when we returned I had to go lay down as my back was killing me.

Now my wife thinks I should just take it easy till the ski season starts. Between seasons passes and kid's gear leases we've invested quite a bit. At the same time I just got into mountain biking. I was even planning on going up to six mile tomorrow.

I'm not sure what my symptoms indicate. I still feel the tingling although I can go about my usual activity. It only got unbearable when I spent the entire afternoon on my feet. I'm not sure what to make of it.

PS: To add insult to injury, of the vrious trails I've ridden on so far, it had to be the Middle School parking lot!

I'd see a regular doctor or a very good chiropractor depending on your philosophy and personal preference.

Oh and I had a friend pull their back out worse than that by just sneezing, so don't feel too bad that it happened at the middle school parking lot.

Feel better.

definitely get it checked out and play it safe in the meantime... you dont want to screw with your back!

Your boys ski? I cant wait until I can ski with my son (well, right now i cant wait till he's born... few more weeks). My old man had me skiing before i was able to walk, im going to keep that tradition going :D

Congratulation! I'm sure he'll grow up to be a good skier (and mountain biker too). It's good to start them early. My daughter, the oldest, started at age 5, the boys started at age 4 and 2 respectively. While my daughter's still cautious the boys have no fear. They'll go down anything, which is real scary for a parent who started skiing at 26!:scared:

If it was me, I'd give it a few days of rest before going to see a doc. Sounds like you just pulled something yanking up on your hbars so many times. I've done that from time to time lifting heavy stuff around the house and rest always does the trick for me. Or you can play it safe and go see a doc. I just hate having him state the obvious and the cheap bastard in me hates that $20 copay.

Man that sounds awfully familiar! I have a sister who is 2 years older than me... when we were really young my parents brought us on a ski vacation in Vermont and put us in ski school. My sister, being older than me, was initially placed in the "older kids" class while I was with the "babies" (note, quoted words are what my parents said i called them). After about an hour they really pissed off my older sister because they moved me up to the "older kids" class. Ah the good'ol days :D

what happens if he turns to the dark side and wants to snowboard instead?

I started snowboarding when I was 26 also... those kids are crazy.... there is further ranting, but I'm not going to bore you.

Anyway...back issues: Rest, pain killers (ie, Tylenol, Advil, Aleve... pick your poison), & a heat pad also helps, as does ointments (Tiger Balm is the greatest ointment ever) or the ointment pads (Salonpas, Icy Hot pads, etc) on the affected area.

A regular physician may prescribe you pain killers---but depending on health insurance such as a HMO, may need to see a regular physician to get a referral to another specialist.

I go to a chiropractor.... some go here & there... I go about twice a week (thanks to a car accident, which left my neck bent the wrong way)

Tingling would usually indicate that there is pressure on a nerve. Definitely worth seeing a doctor. Otherwise, ibuprofen and keep moving! Avoid sitting for extended periods of time. Look for excuses to take short walks. The last thing you want to do is just completely rest.

I have insane complicated and debilitating back pain from years of being an asshole and from a bad motorcycle wreck. The only thing that effectively helps me is the bike. If my back hurts too much for mountain biking I'll just cruise around for a few hours. Rarely happens anymore though. The constant movement of my hips from pedaling on a bike has almost cured my back problems. During this winter though I know it'll come back when I get a lot more lazy :)
If I sleep more than 7 hours I'm screwed, back is bad for the first few hours of the day. If I spend too much time off the bike it starts creeping back.
I'm not saying this is what will cure you, but it's the only thing that has worked on me.
I've seen more doctors than I can remember. Had the epidurals, PT, MRI's, suggestions from a zillion doctors.
The chiropractor helped the most out of all the doctors. He got me into health enough to be comfortable and not stress out my back any more. He was also the cheapest.

Ever see a physical therapist?

I am quite pleased to see quite a few responses suggesting alternative therapies. I suggest a chiropractor, massage/rolfing, and yoga... no, not all at once, but you will learn what works best for your body. I have had low back pain for a freaking year now and I have had enough of trying to push through it. I started to run lately and give myself a rest from the bike. It feels fabulous!

Update: I took some of your advice and went to see the doctor. The x-ray didn't show anything out of place :whoopdedo . The doctor said it's a torn ligament. Nothing that two whole weeks of inactivity can't fix :( . I do appreciate all the suggestions. Thanks.

An X-Ray won't show any sort of disc issue. You'd need an MRI for that, but it's probably fine...either a torn ligament or just a simple muscle strain. Just don't let "inactivity" mean "sit on the couch all day" or you'll wind up in worse shape than you're in now. Be sure to get up and walk around frequently!

You may want to visit a chiropractor. They'll help alleviate the discomfort if it is a disc or nerve issue. Hope you feel better :)

dont waste your time with a chiropractor, there a step above a tarrot card reader. go to a real MD and get the problem accurately diagnosed. Good Luck to you.

I had lower back pain that appeared out of nowhere. The pain was very uncomfortable all through the day. I lived with it for about 6 months, then I slept on a really hard bed for a week and it went away.

Sometimes the simplest of things do wonders.
