advice- mountain creek

I know I'm sure this is a common subject for the noobs on this forum, I did some searching but didn't really get all the information I wanted about the place.

I was at mountain creek for oktoberfest this past weekend and I saw that they rent bikes for $190. Great. I spoke to some employee at a both outside that "worked in the bike shop for years" and he said that there is one or two trails that are ok for hardtails. This is of course what I currently ride, hardtail 29er.

I really want to check this place out, but I don't want to destroy my bike. Now I've been riding all my life(motorized or not)but at the same time I am by no means an amazing mtb rider, I just got back on pedals a month or so ago after about a decade away. I'm not gonna justify my skill set any more than that because it's really irrelevant, I'm an amateur on the mtb.

Is it worth the rental? I'm leaning towards yes because I would hate to buy an expensive ass bike only to find out I don't really care for downhills(although I don't believe that would happen, I'm an adrenaline junky on two wheels usually). I heard through the grapevine that there is a cheaper rental shop down the road a bit from mt. creek? Anyone have any experience renting from either place? likes/dislikes?

Any and all info appreciated. thx

P.S.-sorry for the rant...its the Glenlivet, gets me rambling.....ha

I've rented from ridetopia which is right next door to the park. It was a bit cheaper and the helmet and chest protector came with the rental. Its a downhill park- use a downhill bike

I agree with renting a bike.

I believe that protective equipment comes with a bike rental at Mt Creek as well. The guys in the shop there are awesome.

i am in your same position but with a 26HT, and came across similar info. everything i read says get a DH bike rental you will have a lot more fun overall im told. when i was at mountain creek for october fest i saw 4 HT riders. i talked to 2 of them and they said its doable just requires a lot of standing and trails limit use. I plan to go in october and rent a bike for the day and after i ride it with the proper equipment ill make judgement call on if i can handle it on my HT. It also comes down to your definition of "fun" for some its fast vs slow, using personal skills to over come obstacles vs letting bike absorb certain mistakes. For my first time i plan to rent, be safe and do it right and go from there.

Rent, I went for the first time last month and rented and had the time of my life, can't wait to go back.

I suppose I could jack the seat post up?

No need for a high seat on dh. Most people slam them so you can use your legs for more suspension. Last thing you want is to get bucked off from the seat hitting your ass.

As for the frame size. Sometimes a little smaller is preferable so the bike is a little easier to more around. Its just personal preference though. How tall are you?

yeah, unless you're over 6'6" i think a large DH bike should be fine.

Definitely rent. The rentals at Mountain Creek (both the GT and Devinci) are really nice bikes and worth the money. It's not that you can't ride a hardtail there, it's just that it's completely missing the point of the place.

If you plan on riding the jump line all day and staying on the green trails then your fine with a HT , now if you plan on actually doing some real DH fun , then rent .

Rent for sure if you really want to enjoy yourself. Like the others have said, there are a few trails that a hardtail would not be out of the question, but you will have way more fun on a DH or freeride bike without worrying about banging up your own trail bike or yourself. Jason at Ridetopia is great , his bikes are well maintained and his prices are better than on the mountain. I bought one of his Brodie rental bikes a few years back and it's still going strong.

Ride the 29er ht and take video.

i kinda would like to see that haha this way when i ride my 26HT ill see if someone can record me and i can compare lol but ill save that for my 2nd ride since i plan to rent first time i go 😀

OP, definately rent a DH bike... your experience will be much more enjoyable. First time I rode at Mountain Creek Bike Park, it was on a 6 inch bike. Not nearly as much fun as a full-blown DH rig.
