24-25 Ski and Snowboard Thread

Late last week/weekend at Stowe:

Thursday was snowing all day but windy. The main lifts on Mansfield closed half day but we had a blast all day and caught a lot of fun runs at Spruce in the afternoon.

Friday started out with the Quad and Gondola closed when I got there at 8:30. I went up the 6 pack and once I saw a few people skinning up I decided to pop out and hike. I followed some wind blown boot pack but it was still pretty dicey as the trail had man made snow piles that were firm. I had to tripod with my snowboard to make it up a few sections.

The hike was worth it - got to the top of National without a track on it save for ski patrol opening it up. I would guess 6-8" of fresh with deeper sections where the wind blew. As soon as I got to the top the Quad opened. Definitely a run to remember!

Funny side note: I met one of the originators of BASE Brooklyn in the singles line. After talking BMX for a while he asked if I was the one that got National as they were coming up (he was on the 3rd chair). Maybe? 😁

With the snow being cold and the crowds not too bad I farmed the open areas as they were skiing very well. After a handful of runs I dipped into one of the wood spots and found a favorite shoot still untouched! Got some of the best turns in a long time and the only time I've gotten that spot untouched in as long as I can remember.

Saturday was most of the same. And another solo day. It was a weird morning with 3-4" overnight but the crowds didn't get there until almost 10. I had an early chair up and rode National again getting white roomed on a lot of heel side turns - not as mega as the day before but still an A+ run. Battling a headache/fatigue from the prior 2 days, I explored the woods 7 runs in and there was still fresh turns to be found.

One of the prettiest areas in Stowe. This ended up being my last run down and the snow off of the wooded exit here was still skiing great.

Grabbed a burrito at Ranch Camp in town after 20k of skiing. Had a great convo with the young worker at the bike shop. I have seen this purple figure before while in RC but don't think I've ever posted a picture of it. Not sure if any one will recognize what/who this character is 🤔

Sunday we got to the hill for an early chair and the crowd did the same. The low angle stuff was skiing great even with the crowds. Banged out 14k vertical and made a quick change/turnaround to get home for the SuperBowl.

Yo Eddy. The only bike I’ve kept through the years.

Anybody try out Carv yet? It's like Strava for skiing only worse since it tells you what you're doing wrong. A good way to take the fun out of your skiing or motivate you to work on technique.

No. I just ski with @UtahJoe - he let's me know what I'm doing wrong.

But he doesn't take the fun out of it. After every day on the hill we eat like we both weigh 275 pounds. Zero fucks given.

Skiing does nothing helpful for my figure. There's usually a full meal and a beer in there somewhere.

This past weekend was equally epic. There were lines below the kitchen sink that were untouched, even at the end of the day.

And all stay away from the Carv app. If you need an app to ski, you’re doing it wrong.

Montana is going to run out of bison next week

As someone who loves data, I'd try it... But I rarely ski groomers where I'm carving big turns... Does is tell me when I'm looking like Johnny mosley in the bumps? 😂

"you look like JM... After he drank 8 beers"

I am shocked you think you can ski like Johny Mosley after he has 8 beers.

I've been bummed seeing the clips on IG 😥 But glad you got it good!

We are going up next week - hoping for at least a little snow but will be happy with some sun and warmer temps too.

Happy Anniversary to breaking my wrist a year ago at Pico!

A week behind but we hit Sugarbush over the Prez weekend. Saturday was family day which means the wife joined in the fun. No lines AT all... we were skiing right up to to lifts, great conditions. Sunday was a different story with the lines although it was mostly in the morning. They reported 13" which was down from the original forecast as the precip changed forms during the day. Most snow i've seen at the house since we started going here back in 2014. Heading to Killington Thursday night.

BTW the house is for sale if anyone wants to start a MTBNJ Skiclub... https://www.realtor.com/realestatea...n_VT_05674_M37356-69880?cid=soc_shares_fs_ldp

i've thought about the carv app. Didn't purchase because of the price. I can't tell if i would love it or hate it. Looks like it has been updated since i last considered it. But still $250 for the sensor and the app. I just don't know. From what i recall you would prob need to spend lots of time of green cruisers working on fundamentals of carving to break all the old habits and then progress in pitch.

I really get the zen of it all, but at the same time always wanting to improve. In the moment i don't necessarily care how perfect a turn is until i slide out on a turn. Or when watching people hold an edge on boilerplate and thinking how i'm just sliding those turns that i really start to think about technique. Sunday was out with my wife and kids and much slower pace than normal so I was really focused on short rounded turns and rolling my inside knee, completing turns and i bet carv would have been nice to have. Normal free ski day with the kids or friends and it is just about having fun, and going and finding the best conditions. At that point, not necessarily worrying about the dynamics of a perfect set of turns.

If i could borrow the sensors and app for a day, i'm sure that would be great. Maybe i would love it and buy it. Not something i need to have, but maybe.

I know everyone shits on Mountain Creek but I don't know what I'm doing and just having fun being a jerry out there. I just got the spring25/winter 26 season pass and plan on going a bunch after work/twilight next year and early/late weekend days for a couple of hours. But I also want to go to good places next year but I'm pretty taken back by the cost of lift tickets. What do you guys do for ikon/epic passes or whatever? Or are there other packages you can get? Or does everyone just eat it and pay full price?
