23-24 Ski and Snowboard thread

Sunshine Village and Lake Louise have been pretty solid the last 4 days. No fresh snow but there's actually a lot of packed stuff here. Plus the views are amazing.

It's easy to like it out here.

Love that view! Seems to go on forever.

First day of our Utah trip... Hit up deer valley with the family... Good day... My son wanted to learn how to ski bumps, so I got to spend a few runs teaching him... Fun while it lasted.. 45 and amazing today.

Stopped by and visited my dad's grave at the pc cemetery (today is his bday) then went to main Street and got some food at the formerly wasatch brewery

Very nice, I've never been, I have to get out there! Which do you like better?

How's the road between banff and the resorts, no problem, or could it be a little sketchy if there is snow/ice? Better or worse than the canyon road going up to snowbird?

You've only been skiing for a few years, I'm guessing you probably picked it up fairly quickly. I think if you have a little bit of balls and any athletic ability, you can be a decent skier pretty quickly, I'm guessing you had some decent yard sales in the beginning? Have you tried snowboarding yet?

How do you feel on the steep stuff now, confident? Maybe a little nervous, or as long as its decent snow, you're good?

Interrogation over.

I liked them both, probably about the same. Louise had more of a Deer Valley feel at first, but then we found the backside which had a sort of Hidden Pico vibe to it and a few of the more challenging trails we tried. Top to bottom, Louise is taller than Sunshine. I think the first full round trip Monday was 6 miles to go up & down just once. Sunshine has the top area which reminded all of us of the back bowl area of Alta, on the other side of the tunnel. Neither had as much tree skiing as the Utah resorts. I don't want to call them glades, as they're more like luge tracks in the trees in both places. If I had to pick, I would say Louise gets the nod.

The road to Louise is the trans-Canada highway so it'll always be plowed. From the highway, the resort is 1.5 miles. Sunshine is a little more canyon-ish so I could see that getting hairy if there's a lot of snow. Both are better and shorter than the canyon road to Alta/Snowbird.

I have been skiing 64 times in my whole life, the vast majority of them in the last few years. I am 52 today so I think it is safe to say you can teach an old dog new tricks.

I have had more yard sales than the local Mom's Club of Smithville. I think 1 of the first times I went to Camelback I probably fell 25 times, no joke. This past trip I fell 3 times. Twice in the tree-luge-run that was maybe a hair above my pay grade. And on a black called Rock Garden which is a trail through an avalanche area with massive boulders. Pic attached for reference.

No on snowboarding, and really no plans to try that.

I am "ok" with steep stuff, especially out west when there's far less chance of ice. I find the sheer ice walls of the east coast harder to deal with. Or the ice moguls on a steep black run can be...let's say challenging. Double black diamond in the west is above my pay grade. Single black is hit or miss. If it's soft it's ok, like you said.

I tried snowboarding for a day out west a long time ago, I went down a good 25 times that day, maybe more, thank god for my helmet and the soft conditions. I don't think i'll be trying it again. I'm still not sure how anybody learns snowboarding without a helmet. You can get pancaked on skis, you WILL get pancaked on a snowboard. The crashed hurt a lot more on a snowboard.

We all hate those ice covered moguls. Only world cup skiers like those ice walls! I'm particularly fond of that feeling you get when you hit an ice patch, and your ski slides out real quick, great for the Mojo. Ice is the worst.
I don't like the look of this at all!

Is your dad wearing the rear entry equips?

I'll be out there super bowl week, looks like they need some snow, how were the conditions?
Haha you bet, those sx91s were the bomb in those days so we thought at least...

Deer valley needs snow, it was beat down, but warm yesterday so still soft....

Went back to snowbasin yesterday for a second day....so glad we did....bluebird day, snow the night before....conditions were excellent. @Chris26er and I did the hike to noname peak.....god what an amazing view

Trip has been fantastic so far....Deer Valley, two days at Brighton, two days at snowbasin, heading to alta today....new snow almost everyday.

All, Trying to get out more skiing but a lack of people to ski with. I usually go with my buddy for a week to Vermont or New Hampshire each year but looking like that is not in the cards for him this year. Any local ski clubs or groups I could hook up with?

I'm not a member, but I know some members of the Central Jersey Ski Club. They regularly use the ski club house in VT.

Short Hills Ski club ?

Not sure what happened to the Bedminster Ski Club,
maybe it is the Central Jersey Ski and Snowboard Club?

there are a few more - just pulling some of the central ones I remember from way back when

just got home from 5 days in big sky. They were LOW tide with the snowpack on Friday; like southern Vermont low snowpack. then they got ~ 10 inches of pow on Saturday through Sunday which made for some great days. Unfortunately I learned the hard way about how famously rocky it is there…DEDAD59B-CF46-4D8C-BC9A-E79B8D10255E.jpeg

I was saying this to @Norm yesterday.... While I haven't yet skied whistler or Jackson hole yet.... Alta is the best place I have ever skied... Snow quality, terrain, vibe, convenience.... Two powder days... Place was totally empty. I can't think of better snow that I have skied on.

That's awesome, you probably hit the best week of the year so far. I'm heading out on saturday for a week, should have gone this week.

Jackson and whistler are both amazing. its all about the snow, whoever has it, pretty much has the best mountain that day.
