2017-2020 Grass & Yardwork Thread

I think I have the opposite problem as some of you. My grass grows like it's on PEDs. You could almost see it growing. There were times last year where I was mowing every 4 days and it still looked unkempt.

My yard was part of the farm behind our lot at one time. I'm guessing we just have extrememy fertile soil.

The size of the yard, plus frequency of mows proved to be too much for my 20 year old budget-tractor so I picked up this bad boy from Walts Outdoor Center in Ringoes last fall.

Cut my time in half almost. Went from being a 4 beer job to a 2 beer job!

Aren't you in NC? Can't you buy a tractor on CL with a back blade for $100 and a case of budwieser? Just park it in the front as lawn furniture when you're done.

Capers probably has 12+" of really good topsoil, just have a truck bring you some JP.

have you done a soil sample? From your lives it looks very fine and compact which leads me to believe it is lacking organics. you may need to bite the bullet and get a few doubles of top soil delivered. The best machines and hard work isn't going to grow in fill dirt.

I think we need to get some topsoil too, the latest round of working on the dirt showed that it is actually not as compact as it once was and feels like stuff may actualyl grow in it.

Planting seed is better then sod. While sod is instant green, it's all top growth with no root system. This is why sod usually shits the bed down the road.
I'd recommend contacting your local Agricultural agent, every county should have one. Ask him what type of seed he would recommend for your yard. If that is a dead end consult NTEP trails for your area. These trials rate seed in every state for overall performance.
Don't put all that labor into your backyard and use inferior products and hope for awesome results.

Yes.
Actually there is a sod grower in that area, East Coast Sod...I would call them and ask them what kind of seed they grow there sod with. They grow some nice stuff.

Didn't see the back story so curious as we will also soon be moving into new construction for the first time, what was originally planted in the back? Did it all just die out in a year??

That zoysia is the bomb but like Iggy says Don't let your friends do Sod!
If your gonna do zoysia it is done by plugs and painstakingly slow in coverage. Once it takes though you will have a thick durable weed free lawn.
