2009 is Nearly in da books. Do you have any lofty goals for 2010?

  • Century,
  • Marathon or
  • 24 MTB Race
What are your goal(s) for the upcoming year(s). When do you start preparing? What will you do to help you achieve your goals?

Hey - I am going to try for a marathon in late Feb (Last Chance For Boston). I did NJM this year, it kind of interfered with times I would have liked to have been riding.

I seem to perenially miss a Boston Qualifier time by a few minutes no matter what age group I am in. We'll see what happens this year. I started doing long runs about a month ago but amended the schedule a little bit to fit in Cathedral Pines. Did 14 miles today, will keep adding a little every week. What about you? Heidi

If you want Boston Marathon, there may be loop holes to get in, like if you raise cash for a charity. Someone said UPS can get you in NY Marathon.

For me I think just doing one: a marathon, century or 24 hr mtb race in 2010 is acceptable, I'd like to do all of them, as I hope to train for all of them. I actually forgot to add iron man triathlon to the list of to do things. This I also am training for as I like to hit the pool a few times a week.

If we get a significant amount of snowfall this winter I hope to do some x-c ski. Last winter I did Ringwood a few times. This winter I hope to go to a few additional places.

I'm shootin for at least one 24hr race, hopefully Allamuchy. I should start recruitin teamates now, I usually wait for the week of and that usually doesnt work out that well, go figure.
At least 1 endurance race also, 50 or 100 miler. I'll be watchin what Ryan does to see how to trail for those.
Right now I'm riding as much as possible, loggin miles and meetin new ridin buddies. Building a nice base and weight training will start soon.

-Finish the DH40. :getsome:
-Win cat 2 race. Maybe😱
-Do a Century road ride.:drooling:
-Get in better shape:popcorn:
-have fun😀

nothing will ever compare to finishing your first marathon, just saying
I heard it said running in the NY Marathon gives a euphoric feeling. As boring as running is, I find it a good way to keep the heart rate up and is more accesable (to run) then to get to the mtb trails.

Yes, I've been following your blog and posts ever since we rode together at the Mahlon group ride. Been cool to follow your progress and you've got a gift in painting your experiences with words.

Cool man. Glad that you enjoy the blog! Set your sights high and just go for one of the big races. Whether it's a 100 miler or 24 hour you'll have a blast! If you need any recommendations let me know.

I work for a NFP athletic foundation, Boston is one of our signature events. I could probably get in anytime, maybe even comp entry. But I want to qualify for real!

So, Freeride you have a lot of endurance goals. Which IM are you thinking of? M dot or Indie?

Individual Medley?

I had swim lessons over the summer but at 75 bux a clip, its too much to stick with year round.

Hopefully we get some snow this winter, and I can take out the x-c skiis

NJ Marathon again. Gunning for 2:59 which would qualify me for Boston '11. 2:55 would qualify me for NYC but I don't think that'll happen. If I feel like keeping up the training I may do Chicago in the fall, but more likely I'll go back to short races (5K-10m) in the summer and fall which are fun and community.

Freeride, besides individual medley, IM = Ironman, you said you wanted to do one. I was just thinking since the WTC branded Ironmans sell out in minutes, a year in advance, you must be considering one of the Indie races or else an IM in the far future. I was just curious which one and why.

A little early for this but if you ever want to get together for an open water swim, post or PM me. I have access to a good lake that you can swim 2 miles each way if you want. I just don't swim that far out alone.

Congrats on your double digit runs...so if you are up to that, you are easily on target for a spring marathon. Did you have on of those in mind? I can't see the OP right now. I did 15 today but it killed me. I am trying for Last Chance For Boston on Feb 27th if I can sharpen up in time. Today was not a great omen for that LOL.

Justin, I might be there at NJM again this year. My husband is threatening to do it. Has to be better weather than last year. It was a big hit last year with the hotel pool, lots of accessible gluten free food (not that you'd need that but we do), so much family oriented pre-race stuff.

You really need sub 3 to BQ? How old are you, like 20? I need sub 4, I'm in the 45-49 ag. Not even...I get get 4:00:59 and that still counts. I am not that crazy about marathons but I just want to BQ...just once. 😛

Good luck and enjoy the training. Heidi

I'll be going for my usual bunch of long races for next year. I'd like to throw in a 24 hour race at some point as well as the last one I did was in 2007. So it looks for this year I'm going to try for this:

Cohutta 100 in Tennessee
Mohican 100 in Ohio
Wilderness 101 in Pennsylvania
Leadville 100 in Colorado
Shenandoah 100 in Virginia
24 Hour Nationals at Big Bear in West Virgina

Then I'll sprinkle in some road races, H2H races, Michaux races and a full schedule of cross. I thought this year was long....Yikes!

Just noticed in my email..there is free swim coaching at Sussex Y this Sunday. If you are not a member it is $10 guest fee to get in. Good deal! I did not open up the workout and read it, I can post it if that makes a difference.

<< You are invitedt to join us this Sunday, December 6th, at the Sussex County YMCA at 3:15 PM for a swim workout with the Sussex County YMCA Adult Swim Club. We will have a 15 minute mini stroke clinic on freestyle during which we will view a video of elite swimmers doing freestyle. I will point out the techniques that allow then to swim with ease and with speed. The swim workout will begin at 3:30 and last until 4:45 PM. Our guest volunteer on deck coach will be Sarah (Bonds) Schwarz. Here is a brief overview of her swimming experience:

-Competitive swimmer for 14 years - swam with Aqua Gems Swim Club, Warwick, NY

-Vernon High School - graduated in 2000
-Individual state championship qualifier all 4 years
-1997 state champion in 200 free relay
-still hold the SCIL Festival record in the 100 free

-Ithaca College - graduated in 2004
-4 time NCAA All-American
-Individual NCAA Championship qualifier in 200 free
-School record holder in 800 free relay

-Assistant coach at Montclair State University for 3 years (2004-2007)

Attached are the two workouts that Sarah will use with those with lanes 2,3, 4 and 5. I will work with the newer swimmers in lane 1 on skill drills and we wil do a shorter workout.

There is no cost for Sussex County YMCA members or members of Y's more than 50 miles from Hardyston and a $10 guest fee for non Y members or from Y's within a 50 mile radius of the Sussex County Y.

Hi Heidi - My goal is 2:59 which would qualify me for Boston, but BQ is 3:10, actually I'll be 35 when I run it so I'll be 3:15. But I want 2:59. After that I'll do marathons just for scenery and fun destinations.

I could actually qualify for NYC by running a 1:23 half. That's more doable for me than a 2:55 full.

If you end up doing the NJM let me know and we'll say hi. Once every 5 years!

I think the lessons were actually $85. Sussex is a bit far for me on a sunday. I must be brain dead not to know IM for Iron Man.
