12 Hours at 909

I was just going to post about this race... Anybody coming up this way to do it? It would be a good tune-up for the Darkhorse 40, esp. if you are racing as a team. Or Allamuchy. This is the same location as the Darkness at 909 Halloween race. There are hills. There are rocks, but no rock gardens. Considered a fast course. Can't answer about your camping questions too much at this point - I need to find out more myself. It sounds like the local long distance freaks will be there (and some not-so-long distance locals like myself), so come out and have fun! I am sure it will be a great and fun atmosphere!

I looked up camping on the DEC website, and the way I am reading it, you do not need a permit if there is less than 10 ppl in your party and you are staying less than 3 nights. No camping within 150 feet of the road or trails. I'm guessing show up and find a spot. That's the theory we are going under.

Another note - there are a few established campsites in the park, but camping there is defined as primitive.

Cool. Thanks. I will just camp out of the back of the truck than.

There is still only 10 riders that Pre-Reg. Kind of odd.

I'm thinking about heading up, don't know if i'm going Fri night or early Sat. Sleeping in the car sounds better then leaving at 5am.

We haven't registered yet. We were waiting to see what kind of teams registered, so we would know what category to fit into. Have to do that tonight, and there is discussion about when to park our pop-up there. We will be trading off the little one while the other rides, so we would like a place for respite for her. Should be cool to have a bunch of bikers camping out Friday night! I'm excited! Bring lots of water as there is no facilities.

This looks like so much fun! I just can't face getting in the car and schlepping to another race this weekend. Make sure you guys post a wrap-up. I will look forward to hearing about it.

Race update:

Well, I fell over into a mud puddle 10 feet from the car, even before the race started. Blood running down my leg at line-up. Not a good start! It was slick for the first couple laps, drying out on lap 3. Unfortunately I was spent by then. Felt the twinges of cramping 1/2 way through lap 3 - pull over to swallow the last of my electrolyte pills. I made it back, and recovered in about an hour, so a good training ride for the Darkhorse 40.

Note to self - vaseline in the shorts would be helpful!

Now hubby Chris is out there to ride for 8 hours 😕. I got to take the little one back home for a nap, eat, ice the knee, shower, kick up my feet on the bed. This 12 hour thing ain't so bad! 😀

I never made it. 21 hour work day on Thurs, 4 hours sleep before being out of the house at 5 am for Friday. Hope it was fun.

Your hubs is a crazy man!

The rest of the story...

The laps were 9 mile laps, rather than 5-6 mile laps as advertised. I liked that better. I returned later with the baby to find Chris had done 6 laps and we were almost 1 lap behind, so he stopped. So we came in 2nd (out of 2) behind a team that had a pro woman, so I guess it isn't too bad. Chris said the course was tough, 1000 ft of climbing each lap, and overall harder than a 100-miler. Yeah for me doing 3 laps, then! Our teammate Ralph did 9 laps and looked completely wiped out. He is more insane than Chris!

The vibe was so great! We backed the van right up to the start/finish area, and we could work right out of the back. Everyone had tents set up, coolers out, sitting in chairs, grilling burgers or chicken. You could leave all your stuff unlocked and go out without worry. One of the guys cleaned out my knee wound for me. My child was playing in the puddles, trying to catch frogs and bugs, wandering through the bike course and no one cared. It was really a fun, classic bike/picnic day!!

That was a fun race. The log road mud climb sucked. It was like 2 inches of just slop. The course was fast and fun after that. Bike is a muddy mess again.😎
