NJ Backcountry Skiing Spots????

NJ snowbowl had a tiny bit of crust on top but still floats pretty well. And there’s been enough traffic there these past couple days that it’s getting packed down nicely. If you’ve got a touring setup it’s the place to be in NJ right now!View attachment 275793View attachment 275794View attachment 275795
Good seeing you and seemingly everyone else there today

Did a couple laps with the family... It's a tough hike in boots... One of these days I'll get a touring set up

Went over to @Wrong Way Dan s house on Saturday, broke in (he's still in Utah) then stole his soul 7s that have marker barons on them.... And a pair of skins.

Took them and my dog over to the tourne this afternoon for a test spin. Not bad.. If I get time I'll hopefully get over to snowbowl

If there is enough snow, pretty much anywhere we ride mtn bikes can be for back country skiing. Back in the late 90s when we consistently got a ton of snow every year, I started telemark skiing on the Wissahickon trails. More recently, I have skied at 6 Mile Run and I also did some XC skiing at Kingdom Trails when I was working in NH a few years ago.

Being able to "do it all" was why I started out on telemark skis and it's still all I know (the idea of fixing my heels to my skis is literally scary to me). However, telemark skiing seems to be dying and has been replaced with alpine touring gear, so that is probably what I would be doing now if I could start over.

Skin up the pipeline at the Sourlands, ski/split board down?

Bunch of years back I went to the top of Murray Drive
There is a service entrance to a water tower - it hooks to the Sourlands public property.
Dropped in and followed some "paths"
Managed some good turns
Came out on East Mountain - around here - https://maps.app.goo.gl/T7iQyE5Ph1SbqsDAA
It is an access point to the sourlands that has been abandoned (look at the tax map)
I stayed clear of the houses there. Hiked back up - which was "fun"
About 400' vertical
