Heckle-cation the other months of the year.

Lemme just say this weekend was amazing. Two great rides, some hangs, dinner with the rents. Many highlights including finishing my P1 rebuild just in time to give it to my dad! I bought this bike the summer I started my internship between sophomore and junior year. I replaced every part then got a new frame. Built it back stock, took it apart for 2 years and finally put it back together again. I was SO happy to tell my mom she can get rid of his old walmart bike. She said "oh we can keep it as a spare" and I looked her dead in the eyes and said "get rid of it."

Thats awesome btw, I would have loved to have been able to give my dad a bike...he would have laughed at me for 10 straight minutes, but still.

I'd like to say maybe I'll get him to ride it but the reality is he's going to take it on vacation 1-2 times a year with my mom and ride it once or twice. Every time they go away I get a call "Matt, can you come tune up the bikes??"

No. No I cant tune up your Walmart bikes. There is nothing in the world that will make those bikes "tuned up" other than replacing them.

So replace them I shall.

Biggest punchline:
"Oh wow! This is a nice one!"
*riding around in a small circle*
"How many speeds?"
'24'
"Oh well, bummer I only use 1 or 2."

Build update!
Picked up a wheel set from 2nd Gear Bikes in Morristown - XTR to Mavic something hard ano.

Lewis Morris Challenge - 2016

Around Thursday my lungs started to feel a little phlegmy. Just a little.

I usually fight stuff off pretty well so I took Thursday off the bike and took 1/4 sick Friday morning so I could sleep in. Seemed to be feeling better. Went on a light MTB shred Friday afternoon with @rsinger814 and felt fine. Saturday morning was feeling a little stuffy with a light cough. I did my 2 hour ride with openers and felt a little coughy afterwards, no congestion. I spent the rest of the day swapping tires on the MTB and replacing my drivetrain on the road bike. I had leftover pulled pork over rice for dinner and grabbed ice cream around 8:30.

'One scoop please'

*oh, it's because it's two scoops and bro dude is now charging me for two scoops. Guess I'm eating two!*

Bed at 10:30 after watching a for Netflix Paul Rudd movie. FUNNY, don't ask me to remember the name. Recently added. Paul Rudd, Funny.

ANYWAY! BED!
A/C on, too loud, too cold. Get under covers, too hot. Out of covers too cold. A/C off, too warm. Coughcoughcough, phlegm. *sounds of A/C* roll over, *too hot* etc. Speed like dog shit. ***kinda sleep, and what I got was dog shit.

Got to the venue around 8:30, made some rounds, bummed around got dressed and pre-rode the start climb and the opening twisties. Feeling kinda okay on em today. Rad.

Start time was 10:00, we started a few minutes late as some Cat 3 racers were still on course. I've been dreading this start since I pre-rode the course for the first time last Saturday. I knew I needed to take the hole shot and set pace up the first climb. I was also concerned about the twisties and wasn't mentally prepared to get dropped because I suck at steering my bike.

SIREN = GO!!!!!!

SSSPPPRINTY McSPRINTS! Ouch. I get out front and lead up the hill. I look down and only see 177bpm, looks low.. hmmm...

I stay in the lead through the twisties, down orange, across the bridge and get passed 3/4 of the way up the rooty orange climb. The guy is in an Expo kit which I immediately identified as a New England team. I believe they are out of Connecticut, a bunch of their guys race CX. Expo kit guy is named Steve. I found this out later, but for ease of this tale lets share this detail now.

Steve SPRINTS by me on the wide root section by the top, gets in front and starts soft pedaling.

😕

We descend to the fire road, turn right and start up towards the side single track section. Steve still isn't pedaling hard. I make a move, he sprints me, I get back on his wheel.

😕

We dip into the side single track. Steve still isn't pedaling hard. I think, "well at least I'm recovering for the fire road climb." We both take the "A-line" and hop the log then turn onto the fire road. Steve climbs very well and sets a good pace but I really want to get in front for the single track section coming up. It's time to start moving on these 'non climb sections.' I make my move into the rough gravel.

aaaaand he sprints me.

😎

We rip the red S/T, turn left onto the DT climb. The next section is MY FAVORITE TRAIL IN THE PARK. I named the segment from the bottom of the last switchback to the lot "Kurt Vonnegut" after the Born Ruffians song which is named after the writer SURPRISE. The specific lyric I sing in my mind from said song is "Gotttaaa Flyyyy!!!" This section is fast. Ya gotta fly! I know where I can push my traction and what lines to take and what roots to unweight over. I dig deep to the top and Steve actually says "you got it."

😱

I ride the DH, rip my fav section 🙂, ride through the lot, down over the bridge and homie sprints by me to the top of the next climb. Dudes got some solid high end. He stays on it a little and opens a 6 bike gap. I don't sweat it, recover and connect by the Yellow trail. I'm curious if Steve is going to drop me on the new DH twisties. We hit the section and I stay on his wheel *yay!*

rollers then rip through the S/F. A large dog takes a lunge at Steve but the owner arrests their hound and nobody gets mauled. Woo!

Steve opens a few bikes up by the top of the hill. Homie has a good power climb, but he stands a lot. I used to stand a lot, now I'm lazy and try and stay in my saddle forever and ever. Just an observation.

Up the twisties, down the orange, up rooty orange, down rooty orange, onto the fire road. Side single track, Steve takes the B-line, I hop the log. He leaves the door open and I try and pass on the inside turning onto the firetrail climb.

Sprints me.

🙄

Up the fire road, down gravel, across red, up the DT, over the log at the top, the hard climb pace slows down at the top. Man, I wanna get around for my section. I make a move up the left. and he sprints me. 😵 I make an explosive move up the right, get halfway by before Steve decides to pinch off my move while countering. Sweet, bro. Whatever keeps me behind you.

😡

I decide it's time to start chatting. This is where I get his name. I offer "Hey, how about I pull the flats and you set pace on the climbs."

"Nope."

"C'mon dude, I'm bored and I know the lines. Just follow my wheel."

"Nope, not how I race."

"When are you planning on attacking?"

"Don't know."

:dead:

I look down and see avg HR 171. To put it into perspective my race exertion at bulldog was 177 avg. I guess this is good because I should have some sauce left to rip the last lap but if this guy won't let me by I'm either going to have to make a shitty dangerous pass on a DH (which is not preferred) or sprint my face off on the gravel and make a shitty asshole dangerous pass on the last corner (also, not preferred.) The ideal scenario is he pops and can't counter one of my passes. Ugh, all of these scenarios are lame. Whatever, I guess second is cool. Though, my HR might be suppressed from this cold and I could be on the verge of popping.

Well, here we go. I sit in and get ready to just ride this last lap on his wheel.

Coming down yellow just before the last bridge before the cinder and the rollers. Steve is bouncing around on his HT and I notice something.

HOMIE'S CHAIN IS DANGLING ON HIS PEDAL. He pulls off inside of the corner and I pass on the outside. This is either going to be a 5 second fix, or a 30 second fix. Time to kick it into high gear!!!!

I love race day down the rollers because I can ride them full bore without fear of a head-on with another rider.

I'm looking back down the hill on the twisties and don't see him. Big gap! okay.. okay.. don't blow this Matt. Keep it smooth, don't crack yourself, defo don't crash, don't flat. ohhhh faaakkk.

Up the fire road I feel my right calf start to act up a little. I ease up and pedal through it. Noted. Lets hold this together.

As I hit the last DH twisties I start thinking I might actually win this. I "shred the berm" in front of @gtluke and clear the section cleanly. Still nobody in sight. ohhhh mannnnnnn, don't mess this up.

Down yellow, over the bridge, rollers, hard right, ON THE GRAVEL. Nice pace to the line, I did it!!!

I started racing in 2011 and have only missed one Lewis Morris Challenge and that was the year I broke my hand. I've always wanted to win this race, I would ride Lewmo or Chimney rock back then and theres no race at Chimney rock. I moved into Morristown in 2013 and it really became my local race. Two years ago as a Cat 2 I had a shot but a guy came out from the midwest on business. We rode with the Marty's Wednesday night ride and hung. ON HIS MOUNTAIN BIKE. He decided to reg Cat 2 and blew me out of the water. Last year was a building year with my entry to Cat 1, but this year...

Great detail for your recap! Reading about Steve's tactics conveyed how it was super frustrating it was for you. Glad to hear that you prevailed! Hope you get the chance to best him again - maybe at Gloucester or Providence CX.

Nice to see you representing Marty's and winning.

Thanks for sharing!

Nice work heckler, I had I feeling you would win today... Those are some interesting tactics, wonder how it would have ended sans chain drop.

Everyone hates on lewis morris, but at lmc speed, its actually really fun. Well except for the uphill shit. I love jumping the roots at the start of the Kurt vonnegut section.

Oh and im posting at this time bc Bob woke up at 1...SCREAMED for 5 seconds into the baby monitor, went back to sleep... Dad? Haha... Fuck might as well just get up and go mow the lawn

Nice job. I wonder if Steve raced the H2H series if he would do that dicky sprint thing at every race to keep racers behind him? Most guys in cat 1 are wise enough to pick and choose there battles, waiting for the right time to attack/counter.

Congrats Kind Sir!

The "sprinted me" loop was quite entertaining. I was hoping the entire story kept coming back to that. Like a joke that is funny once, twice maybe a couple more times, then gets old, then so old it's hillariously funny again.

After this weekend, I've come to realize racing young people gets old quick...

Nice work Matt. During the 15 minutes I was part of the race, I could tell there was something up. I was 3rd right behind you guys sitting on his wheel and could sese he kinda sucked in the turns. As soon as it opened up a little I got right around him and was on your wheel for a while. I was RIGHT behind you but even still he's trying to get around me in every turn. Not like you were gapping, so I told him to fucking relax.
Going down the hill to patriots path he made a really sketchy pass on the outside and I could have put him in the woods but I was on the verge of seeing spots so I just held my line and let him go.
I called it a race right not long after that so I didn't get to see too much more.

Dude was pretty aggro. Kinda wish you did put him into the woods. HE WOULD HAVE PUT YOU INTO THE WOODS. Hell, he almost put me into the woods.

He definitely was racing with damage control tactics. He admitted I was faster through "the techy bits" so he was just doing everything in his power not to let me set the pace.

Homie is ranked second in the Cat 1 30-39 Kenda Cup East series.

Does he have any good finishes? You could probably just race every one and be ranked high. Those races are all over and require a lot of travel which most aren't willing to do.

Forgot to hit start on my garmin until I was on that first steep climb...so strava only has my lap 2 and 3...Goddamit...no KOM to later be stolen by Lando 🙂

Points ranking is nonsense....im currently ranked 2nd in pro and we can see how nonsensical that is.

Nice work Matt! I loved the recap. Great character development. Dislike the body blocking strategy.

All of my racing so far has been really positive. Just about everybody calls out passes, then thanks you for it. I can't speak for what happens at the front of the pack. I secretly wish that he didn't drop chain so you could smoke him anyway.😛 It would have been awesome to see what would have happened. What was your exchange like after the race?

The front of the Cat 1 race can be a little different the the polite days. If I come up on someone I still politely ask to get around with the (usually) mutually understood logic, "I wasn't on your wheel, now all of a sudden I am on your wheel, can I please come around." Some people won't let you by even if you aren't racing them! EG Aggro SS guy at Bull Dog sitting in 2nd to last place in his class while Jeremy rode away winning my class.

When you are racing with people of the same fitness and skill level there usually isn't too much passing. For me this year if I've been riding with someone my speed I only really get a chance to pass if they mess something up. A bad line, a dab, whatever it may be. Passing becomes an opportunistic move. And even with that it becomes a tactics game. You try and get in front for the sections you are better at. Tommy and I traded off a few times at Jungle, he also wanted to be in front but not to the extent of slamming my hand in the door every time I made a move.

Then you have this weekend where you have a guy that refuses to let you by. I still don't really get his tactic but it worked. He could seemingly sprint all day. It takes a lot of energy to get by someone like that. Assuming we were the same strength I need to cover two bike lengths to get in front of him which is very unlikely if he makes the same power. So you try and try again until one of you cracks which is why I basically sat back and figured I'd have to let the last lap play out because I wasn't about to crack over sprinting because I was impatient.

After the race I called him a PITA, laughed, shook his hand and said I was bummed he dropped his chain. I'm not in this to be aggro, dude was nice enough after while chatting.

Looks like he had a 1st and a 2nd
