North Jersey Dirt Epics

Bikepacking in techy singletrack isn't a lot of fun. The straps on most bikepacking gear will snap with a good hit. I've broken a few front handlebar bags from doing things I shouldn't have on a loaded bike.

I didn't actually read through this, I will now. If there's a ride happening that will take many days, count me in.

I remember when I thought the Mahlon death march loop was hard

I want to do that loop you did on saturday...but like over the course of a week.

Really impressive man

I'm more into single day dirt epics now, trying to link multiple parks together to hit good singletrack. I had the idea for a three day ride, but I was looking to couch surf so as not to have a fully loaded bike. I would also be down for some multi day bikepacking on less technical trails, but I don't have the gear yet. You'd likely be bored by my pace, but you're welcome to join anytime. I'm going to try and post my rides up in this thread in the future.

You could probably do that loop in 6-7 hours based on how long it took me.

riding from park to park loaded, then stashing gear and shredding gnar unloaded followed by camping is a popular option also

I want to know where I can get my hands on the paper.

I've done a few a brevets in the rain where It would've made things a lot nicer

I have the digital and paper copy of all the North Jersey maps. It sucks that you have to buy them all twice, but it's a small price to pay. The app version is awesome because it shows you where you are (like Maprika, except all of the maps are GPS accurate), but the paper copy never runs out of batteries or falls in a water crossing or smashes on a rock. I also like the paper maps for spreading out on my dining room table when I'm planning something.

http://www.opencyclemap.org/ is a good resource. I've added a bunch of resources too it. I know @Bleeder has too.
It's nice because if you find a trail that isn't on the map, just add it!
There are app versions of it too which geolocate you.
Would be dope if there was a good handlebar mount GPS that used these maps since they are so easily updated.

Yes i love maps. Actually they are one of my secrets crushes.

I was referring to the acutual paper itself. Tear resistant and water proof. Just brilliant.

It kinda reminds me of the tyvex envelopes FedEx uses; in which case they wouldn't be paper

Yeah all that stuff is tyvex now. Including 90% of the junkmail I get so I can't burn it in the fire 😉

rite in rain sells their "paper" too, i was gonna use it for GDMBR cue sheets and elev. profiles

A ride like that I'd rather not know the elevation. Let's just say,"a lot of climbing". OK maybe give me the number one time and that's it .

My attention would be on what I can control

The other nice thing about that special paper is when I leave the map in my shorts pocket and wash them...it survives! Done that a few times.

haha i hear that, its good to know what youre in for for each day so you can pace yourself appropriately

plus these were super detailed ones someone made on bikepacking.net that included color coded regions for higher concentration bear areas which is pretty rad

Oh they make sense now!!! Knowing you're amongst a lot of free roaming brown bear is a good thing.
