In the knarly world of AllaireWhere is this glorious drop?
That canal route Jim mentioned,.i did that 5yrs ago took me 4 days for 350ish miles.
"maybe" just maybe,i will do Erie canal from buffalo to Albany 400ish miles...85% dirt and no climbs!
Rest week this week. Today, back on the bike. The company I work for is making plans to move out of our Lawrencville office and move to Pennington.
We toured the facility this morning to begin planning the buildout. Immediately after the tour, I hit the road to recon how close the office is to the good roads.
Thanks MichaelI did this last year. It's not 85% dirt. There's a lot of cinder path, but also a lot of road. There is no one single trail for the Canal Path -- whole areas require connecting sections along roads that aren't always super easy to navigate. Every time you enter a city region, you are off-trail until you get to the other side. This was true of Syracuse, Rome, Utica, etc. Syracuse was a sh*thole, too, and navigation on the eastern side was a nightmare using the maps I had from the Park System (if you go, use your phone to navigate and you'll be better off.) The only city where there was an actual pathway all the way through was Rochester. The rest all required roads. I went to Niagara Falls instead of Buffalo, so I don't know about Buffalo itself - the path bends toward Buffalo, so I had to leave it and do the last 20 miles all on the road. Overall it's a fun trip just for the distance alone, but the pathway itself does get boring over some stretches. There are some areas where you have a choice of more than one route (e.g., between Seneca Falls and Weedsport) so you may be able to avoid some roads there if you chose one way over the other. But I guarantee you even then it won't be close to 85% dirt.
