Garmin Edge 200

Arwen's Mom

Mother of Dragons, Breaker of Chains
Any one have one?

What do you like about it?
Hate about it?

If you have upgraded to another type garmin, compare the two. WHY did you upgrade?

If someone uses another type garmin and loads up to the garmin site, can those files be downloaded to a 200 model so you can follow their tracks?

How user friendly is it?
Do uploads/downloads take FOREVER?

I want to be able to follow other people's tracks. I do not care too much about heart rates cadence etc. PRICE is a HUGE factor right now.

I do not have one, but because of all the contest riding I just ordered one. Sorry I have nothing constructive to add,😱 but the price is right and I will find out how accurate the mileage is compared to my bike computer.:hmmm:

The eTrex looks interesting too and does not have a touch screen like the Dakota. They sell a bike mount for it as well. Might be worth looking into but i have no experience with it. My Dakota does what I need as long as I don't smash the screen into a rock again 😉

eTrex is better than nothing but I have not use it since I bought Edge500. The last one allows to follow tracks but it is not fun at all. I bought 800 soon after 500 and use them both depends where I'm going.

Price is easy but the 200 doesn't show time of day and screen is pretty darn small.

Most guys with beards like yours could calculate the time of day by the angle of the sun in the sky.

AM: A friend has the 200 and she is happy with it. Dustin is right though...it is annoying to not have the time of day on any screen. Other than that, it works for her and the screen is the same size as the 500 (maybe the resolution is different?). I don't know if she could follow a downloaded course on it, however. She never asked so I never researched it.

EDIT: It does say you can use Garmin Connect to create courses. Maybe the features are limited though?

I have a 410 (forerunner - it's a watch made more for running). But just ordered the 810 - no more getting lost! Getting ready for mega-road rides this spring. Curious to test the distance accuracy between the two.

Had looked into this when getting the 800. I think the deal is you can get a course and record tracking data that can be mapped later with the lower models, but you don't get an actual viewable map on screen until you get to the 705 or 800. Had tried finding an older 705 but wasn't worth it in the long run since I could get a newer 800 for near the same price.

I have a 200. I like it for what it does, good cyclocomputer and can upload files to garmin connect or whatever system you want. Not good for maps or pre planned routes though

if you have a smart phone w/gps, the mapmyride will let you pre-load a course and follow it - then run strava app- cause MMR traps you data, so it can't be exported.

i dont use map my ride anymore, but you used to be able to export the data, unless they did away with that feature (i believe it was on a case by case base, which is a royal PITA, but it was still possible

stupid phone. It has a gps function but when I tried to utilize it the phone blew up and needed hospital care.

I like the idea of the 200 because the price was right for my budget right now. But as TMS says, if I cant follow a course then....well...not what I am looking for. See this is what I dont get, the description says you can use the "Course Creator feature to plan new rides" but if you cant FOLLOW it, whats the use?

And this: "You also can download rides from other Garmin Connect users for a virtual competition" which means there has to be SOME way of FOLLOWING it otherwise how could you COMPETE with it?

While a view of a map on the screen would be nice, I would be happy with an arrow or a beep to say "turn here"

ho hum...never getting a garmin... 🙁

Your best bet is a 705.... spend the extra $ and make it back by cutting other stuff out. I had one for 2 years no problems at all. (Changed out the battery once) but it was very good and very useful. Might be able to get a new one for cheap since ppl are using the 510 810 and 800.

You can't put a price on making a ride that goes places you've never been before and you don't have to worry about being lost. I made a file last night that was 50 miles of unfamiliar roads the ride went from my place up and around Sterling Forrest in NY and back.

That's $100+ LESS than onlines and ONLY $75 more than that crappy 200 (JIC you dumb 🙂 ). I was going to offer up my old 705 but the screen is cracked.

Garmin sent me a refurbished 705 for a little more than ~$110 to replace my broken one. Maybe they would do the same for this one (keeping the cost more like a 200)??
