We Don’t Need No Stinkin’ Crutches!

I am beyond excited just to be able to walk and have the use of both my hands simultaneously! Plus it will be nice not to sweat like a whore in church every 10 steps because all my weight is on my hands. Speaking of weight, I haven’t checked and don’t really plan on it. I would think that with the loss of muscle mass combined with whatever weight I have gained would result in a fairly inaccurate depiction of where I am. All I know is my cardio is crap and I’m weak.

This will serve as my rehabilitation thread. I’ve been (over the last couple of weeks) and will be quite active going forward so content shouldn’t be an issue, but it won’t be updated daily – I’d guess 3-4x per week.

Over the last 3 weeks I have been swimming laps everyday at LA Fitness. The pool is a 25 meter 4 lap pool so over the last 2 weeks I have been doing 20-25 50m laps each day (there and back). The first week was getting re-acclimated to swimming (I did some lap swimming in my early 20’s) and was only doing 10-15 laps. Beyond that I’ve been doing my own version of sofa leg presses with a resistance band wrapped around my back and looped to my foot.

So let's get right into it then...

Today:

I knew today was going to be a big day for me. I woke up right when the alarm went off at 7:30 and got right into it. I rolled over and with my legs hanging off the bed did 50 alternating leg extensions (quick to get the blood flowing before I put my legs on the floor). Next I hit the floor and did 4x20 pushups and 4x25 v crunches (where you lift your legs at the same time as you crunch), alternating pushup, situp, pushup, situp with no rest. I made some oatmeal, showered, made some calls, sent some emails, then off to the OS. I felt good so I knew dude was going to say lose the crutches and he did!

Left dudeman’s office after being having the proverbial ball and chain removed and stopped for gas and ran into this sexy man (Walter is looking very svelte I might add!) no homo! We chatted for a few and after I pulled out (no, really NO HOMO!) I realized I didn’t snap a pic so this is the best I could do:

It’s always good to see Walter. While I’m talking about Walter, thought I should mention that he just so happens to be the main reason you all have to put up with my rhapsodies as he was the one who introduced me to the board back in the summer of ’09 so feel free to direct any animosity or hostility his way if I have effected you in any way!

Anyhoo… I get home and have lunch, a cup of coffee, and a bottle of water then it was off to the gym. Jump in the pool and do 25x50m laps in 5 lap sets. It’s exhausting but the the pretty females at the desk (which is just beyond the glass wall to the pool) keeps me motivated 😉

I head home and I’m exhausted, eat another bowl of my tuna concoction, shower and head to the post office to send out some stuff I sold on fleabay that’s been lying around. Come home and feel pretty damn good (emotional high and all) so I jump on the trainer for an hour. Certainly not fast or long or anything like that, but this is the most fun I’ve had on the trainer EVER! I’m also waaaaaaaaay out of shape but I guess it could be worse.

That’s all I got right now as I’m getting a little tipsey… the second glass of my celebratory bottle of Malbec is starting to set in!

*Interesting note - my knee (while swollen) doesn't bother me really at all, but my calf, ankle, and foot are really sore... I guess since I haven't used them in 3 months.

3rd post but this one is important. When will you take it to the streets? I'd imagine that's something you won't want to rush into but you have to be able to see that light at the end of the tunnel

thanks yo! I told him it looks like the 2 of you are having slender contest... he is looking thin...

road rides depend... the doctor actually told me I could technically ride the road, as long as I don't fall or slam the foot into the ground... I rode the trainer with sneakers, I tried to clip in but the cleats put my foot too far back and the angle for the knee was a little too much... I'll give it a couple of days on the trainer and keep icing my old bones and take it one day at a time...

Glad to hear your making great progress. Take it easy though! I definitely know I overdid it in the first few weeks, so go slow.

I also like the elevation change in your living room. I'm assuming it's a sunken living room and you ended up in the kitchen or a small seismic event occurred in E-town today.

Nice Lou!! Good to hear you are ready to get back on it!!😀

thanks man! as soon as I'm good to go we have to set something up!

Walter sighting = BONUS!!

Walter is the dreamiest!

yeah, you're definitely right... today was all emotion... I'll take it easy...

I like to hold my garmin in the air and drop it on the ground for a couple of extra feet hahhaaa!

Great news. Take it steady and it'll be next years race season before you know it.

thanks Colin!

I am soooo glad to "see" you are up and about!

Take it slow and easy, you dont want to rush things now. I know you are excited to "get back out there" but listen to "Mom" and take it easy.

I love the photo of the crutches in the garbage.

Maybe when you are ready to ride, find people to ride with that will set a moderate pace for you until you are ready to to hammer harder. They do that with race horses ya know 😛

You might consider a set of the ergon flat pedals. I have not tried them but Ron c's wife had some on her bike.

Very nice to drop the crutches.

Now more than ever, sleep and nutrition is key.

He is hoping the cloud has lifted.
