What was the scene like in the Warwick Burrito place? Two bloodied guys in torn up bike clothes and shoes walk into a mexican joint with Castner? Man, I would have paid to see that....

Add to that scene the fact that Rog wasn't wearing any shoes. We got a lot of funny looks and a few people asked us what had happened. One of the EMT's was in there getting a taco. All the EMT's and hospital folk were really cool. I can't say the same for all the Warwick cops....one of whom was trying to quote chapter and verse from the NTSB rulebook on why the accident was our fault!

NY Law???

Thank you guys so very much for all the kind words and wishes. I can safely say that I speak for Rog as well when I say that it means everything, and reinforces why I am a cyclist...the sense of community is just amazing and I'm overwhelmed with emotion because of it.
We are both just fine. I have a huge lump (soon to be another huge bruise) on my hip that hurts when I walk, but will probably not bother me too much in the saddle. Rog also bashed his hip, and got 4 stitches in this right arm. Suffice to say, it could have been a whole lot worse. Here's a brief description of what went down:
Rog and I were 2:37 minutes into what was supposed to be a roughly 60 mile road ride. We were on West Ridge Rd. in Warwick coming down a hill at about 30 mph with Rog in front and me trailing by several feet. At the bottom of the hill, where Sleepy Valley Rd merges gently from the left, a red SUV was pulling up to the stop sign, When it continued slowly through the stop sign (I can't say for sure whether or not it came to a full stop), we thought it must have seen us, but we started to slow down, unsure if it was going to speed up, or wait to let us pass it on the right. I continued to move slowly and just as we were about to pass it, it make a quick move to the right, directly into Rog's path. He had just enough time to shout YO!!!!!!! before slamming into the righ rear side of the truck with a sickening crunch that will be idelibly etched in to my brain for a very long time.
Rog careened off the truck and went down hard right in front of me. I couldn't avoid him, hitting his bike with mine, and went down as well. We both landed about a foot away from one of a pair of large stone pillars on either side of a driveway. Scary. It took me about 10 seconds to realize that I wasn't badly hurt, but Rog looked a lot worse. He was bleeding and clutching his right arm, and was clearly in shock and a lot of pain. He was was pretty sure he'd broken his arm.
I called the cops and an ambulance and we waited for them to show. It turns out the SUV was attempting to turn into the driveway we'd crashed into, as that was the drivers residence. Of course they claimed they never saw us at all and they didn't have their signal on while making the turn.
I'll spare you the rest of the details...mainly because I'm falling asleep while writing this. All I can say is that we're both really lucky, and it could have been much, much worse. We'll both be back on the bike in time for WJAP on Sunday. Thanks again everybody!!! Especially Panhead who not only picked us up, but waited in the hospital, took us out for burritos afterwards, and drove us home. You're the man Dave!

I don't know the NY car/bike laws that well, but this is what I have:

Section 1146. Drivers to exercise due care.
Notwithstanding the provisions of any other law to the contrary, every driver of a vehicle shall exercise due care to avoid colliding with any bicyclist, pedestrian or domestic animal upon any roadway and shall give warning by sounding the horn when necessary.

The motorist must always remember that cyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as drivers of motor vehicles, and motorists are required to exercise "due care" to avoid colliding with bicyclists (Sec. 1146). As a safety measure, motorists should make scanning for bicyclists second nature, give cyclists plenty of clearance when passing them, and give them the right-of-way when appropriate.

Report to the DMV within 10 days a bicycle accident involving death or serious injury (Sec. 605(b)). If no motor vehicle was involved, use a bicycle accident report (MV-104C). If a motor vehicle was involved, use a motor vehicle accident report (MV-104A). Forms are available at motor vehicle offices. Parents may file on behalf of minor children.

Section 1234. Riding on roadways, shoulders, bicycle lanes and bicycle paths.
(a) Upon all roadways, any bicycle shall be driven either on a usable bicycle lane or, if a usable bicycle lane has not been provided, near the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway or upon a usable right- hand shoulder in such a manner as to prevent undue interference with the flow of traffic except when preparing for a left turn or when reasonably necessary to avoid conditions that would make it unsafe to continue along near the right-hand curb or edge. Conditions to be taken into consideration include, but are not limited to, fixed or moving objects, vehicles, bicycles, pedestrians, animals, surface hazards or traffic lanes too narrow for a bicycle and a vehicle to travel safely side-by-side within the lane.
(b) Persons riding bicycles upon a roadway shall not ride more than two abreast. Persons riding bicycles upon a shoulder, bicycle lane or bicycle path intended for the use of bicycles may ride two or more abreast if sufficient space is available, except when passing a vehicle, bicycle or pedestrian standing or proceeding along such shoulder, lane or path, persons riding bicycles shall ride single file. Persons riding bicycles upon a roadway shall ride single file when being overtaken by another vehicle.

Section 1146
The driver of the vehicle intending to turn at an intersection shall do so as follows:
(a) Right turns. Both the approach for a right turn and a right turn shall be made as close as practicable to the right hand curb or edge of the roadway or, where travel on the shoulder or slope has been authorized, from the shoulder or slope.

Any help to get Gordon's and my bike repaired by their insurance company would be greatly apperciated.

Thanks again for the kind words.

Gonna have to get the VTC Lawyer on this one. Good thing we retained Kardashian early. Now if I could just bang his daughter.....

Several years ago a motorist took out some former team mates of mine coming back from a Thursday night group ride. I was not there and fortunately no one was seriously hurt. The driver basically had a brain fart behind the wheel and damaged wheel sets and totaled some bikes. His insurance ended up paying for the damages but it took awhile, like 6 months...that's the suck.

Glad to hear you and Gordon are ok.

Thanks

Many thanks for all those that have reached out to lend a hand (Dave and Gordon) and say a few kind words. I'm still a little banged up and out of it. It's hard to sleep when every side of your body has some type of cut or bruise. My goal is to try and rest this week and not ride at all. I still plan on hitting up the Six Pack and hobbling around that course. See ya there. Thanks again.

Don't worry about it, Rog. When Gordo called I figured he wanted to get out for a ride, not looking for a ride. You guys were real lucky, besides the car there was a drainage ditch and 2 brick columns. Gord looked to be busted up more than you with the way he was hobbling around.

I'll be spending the next few days with the boys from Philly AND Boston, ought to be fun.

Just caught up to this thread. Sorry to hear about this but glad you guys are somewhat OK. Glad to hear Dave was around to help and to pay for the Burritos. Riding on the road is always such risk. I tell my friends that riding in the woods is dangerous but I control it, If I get hurt it is because of something I did wrong, on the road its out of my hands and I have no control of who can hurt me. Get better fast and hope to see you guys at the 6 pack riding slower then me 😉

I also just caught up with this thread. I don't know you but I'm sorry to hear this and I hope you heal fast.

I only rode on the road for about a year and had a couple of close calls myself. My road bike has sat in the trainer since I did my last triathlon and it'll stay there.

Good luck.

Congrats Prez

Great job by Da Prez on Sunday taking the win at the SSSP...once again showing why he be Da Prez. Too bad he'll never be allowed to keep that trophy in the house.

Trophy talk

Thanks, but the trophy lies on the dining room table and will most likely find it's way to the VTC clubhouse. Jack likes to ring the bell on the bottom of the trophy, and I've grown to like like it (kind of like "the Lamp" in A Christmas Story). So it may be around in the main house for a while😀.

Nice job on the designs Woody! BTW, I had him sign it. It's an offical piece of art.

Great ride today of the Bearscat 50 course with the majority of the VTC board, plus some special guests. The high point of the ride was when EABODS was forced to crash into the woods while ripping down Pines to avoid hitting an angry 5+ foot Timber Rattlesnake that was right in the middle of the trail 😱. He bashed his knee and tweaked his ankle, but was not bitten. Lucky! A bite from that fat fellow would have been a very, very, very bad thing.
