*10/2/10* We’ll be putting the new mower thru its paces when we brush out the OakHill and Teaberry Trails on Saturday October 2. There’s several blow-downs that still need to be removed and a whole series of face slappers to be clipped. Good times! We’ll meet in the Batsto Visitor Center parking lot at 9 and quit at 12:30. (After making those trails fast again.) Maybe a short ride afterwards to confirm/enjoy our wonderful work.
Bring your bike & backpack.. Clippers (and saw) if you have them. And work boots, if you’re not fond of walking far in bike shoes. Beverages will be served.

*11/6/10* Trail Work Cancelled

*10/8/10 & 11/12/10* Friday Night Rides. 😀 Wheels out of the Visitor Center lot at 8:00 pm with opportunities for late arrivals to jump in when the ride returns to the lot (to drop off folks that need to leave early). No drop. Helmet required. Lights too. The 11/12 ride is part of the JORBA 2010 State Wide Ride Series

*10/30/10, 11/27/10 & 12/19/10* Morning Rides. Wheels out at 9:00 am for the Saturday rides on Oct. & Nov., same with the Sunday ride in December. Figure on a no drop advanced beginner pace ride along with the option of an intermediate+ paced longer ride splitting off after several miles.

Any chance of changing any of the TM's to a Sunday? I'm working every Saturday now.
Every now and then, we do some impromptu work @ WSF on a Sunday. We'll have to start posting those days. (Though it will be on short notice.) I recommend going to the movies and watching *Machete* in the interim.

You do have to admit,it makes a wonderful noise....Ching..Ching...Ching

careful with that axe Eugene

Weather forecast looks good for this Saturday morning. 🙂
We'll meet near the trailhead (in Batsto Village Visitor Center parking lot) at 9:00 am and pedal down to the work site. We'll clear the deadfall and brush out the Oak Hill and Teaberry trails.
Bring your bike & backpack.. Clippers (and folding hand saw) if you have them. And work boots, if you’re not fond of walking far in bike shoes. (We can truck the boots to the site.) Bug spray and long pants are good ideas too.
We'll quit around 12:30 (or maybe sooner if the new mower is as good as promised).

THANKS 10/2/10 Trail Crew

Much thanks to: Dan McGinnis, Johnny Freeman, Mike Rothmel, John Williams Ken Schwing and *Cannondale Ray* for spending their Saturday morning clearing fallen trees and brushing out the full lengths of Wharton’s Oak Hill and Teaberry Trails.
Both of those trails shaped up nicely from the effort.
(We were surprised to see three hikers on the OHT when heading back to the truck. Not being certain of the trail yield rules when a mower is involved, we just waved and hustled onward.)
Good times, perfect weather and clear skies! Swoop! 😀

(Apologies for not remembering Rays full name.)

10/30/10 JORBA Ride @ Wharton

Weather forecast looks good for the JORBA Ride @ Wharton this Saturday morning. Meet in the Batsto Visitor Center parking lot at 8:55 am. And we'll aim for wheels out at 9:00. 😉 No drop advanced beginner** pace ride on the near trails (with loops back to the lot to provide options for varying milage, 5, 8, 10 or 12), along with the possibility of an intermediate (that one is for you Rick) paced ride splitting off onto the Orange.

Helmet required. Hydration recommended. Spare tube and pump beats walking. Void where prohibited. Your actual milage may vary.

(**Advanced beginner defined as... this is not your first five mile, or maybe more, off-road ride. 🙂 )

1/9/11 Sunday JORBA Ride

Don't know what Friday's storm will bring, but Sunday's weather forecast is looking good, sunny and chilly for the JORBA Ride @ Wharton.

If Friday's storm leaves the singletrack sketchy, we'll be riding the usable sand roads.

February 2011 stuff

2011's first trail work day, Saturday February 5 is dependent on weather (though the snow is melting fast today 🙂). Current plan is to meet near the trailhead in the parking lot at 9:55, then ride and/or drive (w/ mower) to the thorny section of the PennBranch for some mowing, raking and clipping until 12:30.

Friday Night JORBA Ride on February 11 should be a chilly one. Meet near the trailhead at 7:50p, wheels out at 8:00. (We'll be asking permission for a few more night rides from the Batsto parking lot next year. In addition to the Friday nights, maybe an earlier start on Saturday nights? cross your fingers.)

Saturday morning February 26 JORBA ride, is like everything listed above, dependent on the weather. Despite the snow, the 1/9/11 ride was a fun fast ride, Batsto to Jenkins n' back, down the Washington Turnpike on snowmobile packed powder, with a photo stop in the ghost town of Washington. 😀

2/5/11 trail work cancelled

Wharton State Forest's scheduled February 5 2011 bicycle trail work is cancelled due to forecasted weather (snow showers) and current trail conditions (lousy). There are still large patches of snow/ice and the freeze/thaw cycle is leaving a lot of standing water and a soft sand slurry. (That will probably get the trailer stuck. )

2-11-11 night ride

Inner loop trails are mostly clear with some random snowy icy patches left. Friday evening’s weather forecast is 30 degrees under a clear sky. The moon will be in first quarter with lots of stars visible (if you’re astronomically inclined). The date 2-11-11 is supposedly auspicious if you’re a numerologist. Or even simply a Lady Gaga fan waiting for the release of her new single (Hi Frank!).

Friday Night JORBA Ride at Wharton Forest. Meet near the trailhead at 7:50pm, wheels out at 8:00. A decidedly casual conversational no drop pace with an eye towards not falling on the ice. raraahahahromaromamagagaoohlala

I hit the trail for a little bit today. I don't know the route for tonites ride but I cleared the dead fall when I was out there. I rode a counter-clockwise loop, Green-orange-blue-red-white back to green. I got everything except one big pine that fell right next to the red trail. So aside from the small patches of snow and ice those parts of the trails are fun and fast. I'm really diggin' that white trail!!
For those that go tonight, have fun,be safe. I'm way too sick to make it.:drooling:

I'm heading down for the fun tonight. I have not yet ridden here 😱
I have no Idea where I'm going so please look for me in a white Ford Escort

😀

Thanks for hosting this Kurt! It was a great night for a ride. Nice to finally get out on the bike after a couple of months of hibernating.😎
Good times!
Wharton is open for Business!

Thanks Mike. There are two more night rides remaining this season. (We'll be doubling the amount of night rides on next winter's 2011/2012 schedule.)

And thanks Nikky. I was a little baffled 😕 while we were riding the nueblue loop as to why there were no blowdowns. Now I know. 😀

next winter

Put next winter's 2011/2012 schedule out on JORBA's WhartonTrailUser page. More night rides! 😀
