Steel frame roll call...

Hello,
With the ever expanding proliferation of uber-plastics, and pixie-dust enhanced aluminums, I sometimes get to thinking that I’m sitting in a cave playing with rocks while everyone else is out discovering fire. Once in a while a thread starts where someone mentions that they are riding something made of steel and I get a warm fuzzy feeling. How many here have a steel bike as their PRIMARY off road ride? I know there are plenty of two-timers with an old 90’s hardtail hanging in the basement while the new bike gets all the love: That doesn’t count. I’d love to know how many here actually bought a new steel bike within the past few years, in the face of all the more “modern” options?

Don't have one yet, but I'm currently looking for a custom builder to build me one. I'm too big for plastic and pixie dust has never been my thing.

Me me me! Haro Mary then upgraded to my Salsa El Mariachi. I love the Salsa so much that I keep it in my house so it doesn't catch cold.

Cool! I've wasted plenty of time on the websites of custom frame builders. This thread from a while back has some nice stuff in it:

Are you considering anyone in particular yet?

Salsa are doing some cool stuff these days. I'd like to ride an El Mariachi sometime for comparisons sake.

Bought my EWR in 2009 and it is my primary mtb.

However, recently I did pick up a giant FS and that will be my rocky terrain and geared mtb.

This time last year, the only non-steel bike I owned was my road bike. However, as it stands now, the EWR is the only steel bike I have (not including the fixie that is technically not a part of my quiver any longer as it is in a witness protection program 😉).

Down the road I can see myself picking up a small shop steel road bike or eventually make a jump to titanium.

I think I've narrowed it down to By:Stickel, Quiring, Ted Wojick, or Shamrock Cycles. I'm actually waiting to hear back from any of them.

I have a Quiring frame (Ti). Scott Q is great to work with. If you decide to go that route you won't be disappointed.

I do like the feel of the scandium frames that I've had in the past. I haven't ridden any of the plastic bikes, so I don't know what I'm missing there and - if I'm paying for my frames - I'm OK with that. I think at the start of last season I had 5 mtb's in service including a couple scandium hardtails. Currently, I've only got 1 operational MTB - A rigid Mariachi singlespeed. I've got another steel frame, with all the parts in a box in my garage - it's just too damned cold in there to build it up.

So... I've got two rigid steel singlespeeds coming into the 2011 race season. Should be a fun year.

My primary road bike is a Steel framed Zinn, set-up fixed. True temper OX is the shit. I do run a carbon fork on it tho.

This summer i'll be living off of my Surly long haul trucker for a few months. I wouldn't even consider doing it on anything but steel.

both my road and mtb bikes are steel.

trail...Haro Mary

road...hand-me-down, old school Univega VivaSport. rocking the steel old school fo sho

funny thing, looking for a picture online for the Univega, I saw this ad selling it for $450 and another one for $600. and I got in exactly the condition pictured including the original seat. it has since been cannibalized/ customized to suit me including mtb handbars, a seat from the 21st century, etc. oh well 😉

had a niner MCR for a couple years, now i'm back on an aluminum MTB. the road bike is a mid-1980's steel frame.

I've got a longtime acquaintance who still rides his first generation EWR. I've always been intrigued by Jay's frame design. I must admit, with all those tubes I'd be tempted to try the ti version.

I've only learned about By:Stickel recently. He's got some good ideas about 29er's though. Quiring was one of the guys I thought about when I was still considering Ti for my last frame. Wojcik has been on my radar since Dirt Rag was printed in black and white. It's good to see him back in the saddle. I'd buy a steel bike from him for sure.

Did you buy that directly from IF? They're another company really high on my radar. Although with history about to repeat itself, through another relocation, I'll be interested to see how the dust settles. Having had a couple of Fat Chance bikes I've always been curious to ride an IF.

Where are you headed this Summer? When I was 14 I rode around Ireland on my raleigh rode bike with panniers and a sleeping bag with a couple of friends. It was an amazing experience.
