James Pearl Thinks Blogging is Dead

holy crap is that guy nerdy (looking and sounding) certainly a more involved process than the aeropess, with the dripper being $9 i may still give it a go.
Youtube sent me this coffee video as a suggestion awhile back. It almost made me stop drinking coffee. Instead I made voodoo dolls of the presenters and poke it daily.

ok... i couldn't get thru the first product... they're annoying

He is completely and totally over the top. At least half the shit he says I don't do. I was going to just explain what I do but figured a YT video would be better. My approach is a lot...more simple, let's say.

I stopped watching at :58. yikes.
I mostly completely stopped drinking when I turned 50 - also because I hated the migraines, the upset stomach and the many days of feeling like garbage. I don't miss it at all, because poison. Problem is, the entire world revolves around drinking and it's so hard to get away from it. For example, this weekend we are going upstate with some friends. It was supposed to be for hiking. Now that it's raining, the texts are flying about all day-drinking they plan to do. I don't want to do that.

Get better friends.

Basically as such:
  1. 22.5g of coffee for the 12oz cup
  2. Ground on the finer side of "normal" but not nearly espresso-fine. IDK how else to explain
  3. Hot tap water to rinse the filter and warm up the dripper/cup
  4. I just dump the grounds in - no fancy cone, a well, shape of an origami swan. Just dump it in
  5. Boil to 200. Pour in just enough to cover the origami swan of beans. No more
  6. Wait 30 seconds
  7. Pour in the dead center, fill up the dripper completely to the top. Pour it slowly, not rapidly.
  8. Wait 1 minute
  9. Now pour around the edges to get the coffee back in the middle. Then just pour in a circle until the dripper is full again
  10. Wait another minute.
  11. You should be close to a full cup now. If not, add a little water to top it off
In all this should take you about 3 minutes.

A Panoply of Choices

It has become overwhelming.

The concept of having any & every book, movie, tv show, and album to consume sounds great in theory. But at a certain point it becomes overwhelming to make decisions. Recently I wrapped up what I was watching on Netflix, and I was paralyzed with so, so very many choices of shows to watch. This does not include Prime, Hulu, nor Apple TV which I just picked up. At a certain point, part of me wants to just have the Borg (or the program directors) tell me what I should watch.

Sidebar: I signed up for a 3-month Apple TV trial at $3 a month for 3 months.

As I mentioned elsewhere on the site, I've recently been interested in baseball again. Prime has a Yankees game on every week. And MLB.com shows 1 free game a week. Now Apple TV has 2 Friday night games. In all, there are 10 baseball games I can watch every week. And I have no choice whatsoever what game I watch. And I kinda like that.

Make no mistake, I don't want to go back to the days where I have to go to the store and buy an album in order to listen to it. Information is amazing. The ability to transfer astounding amounts of data is fabulous. The same information infrastructure that allows these choices also allows for me to have a career working from home. I would never want to go back.

But I really do enjoy that if I want to watch a baseball game today, I will either need to watch Texas play Seattle, or nothing at all. As it turns out, I'll be watching nothing at all. Still, I appreciate this finality of no choice in the matter.

Ruminations on a Sunday Evening

Some confessions from yesterday:

1. I used the word panoply just for Chris G
2. I ended up watching half the Texas-Seattle game after all

Today was going to be an outside ride in theory, but every time we went out on the front porch it didn't feel any warmer than when we woke up. The thermometer slowly went upwards until it sat slightly above 50, but it never felt good enough to go out. We decided to stay inside again; D first, then I followed while she brought Simon to his soccer game. I watched the Rays beat the Braves and stopped as soon as they recorded the final out. I know most people don't care about baseball and I get it. When I'm not watching baseball I'm catching up on Severance and Ted Lasso.

I've been dragging ass in getting outside this year. Spring is never amazing, but I feel this year has been especially garbage. It feels like every weekend is a cornucopia of rain, and I just don't want to drive 45-90 minutes to find out that whatever trail we picked is a mud slide. It's been a bit disappointing. I've been on 2 road rides but aside from that, little desire to hit the road either.

The coming week looks better and we're planning to ride outside this week and next weekend. And once the ball starts rolling I know it'll all be just fine. But man, this spring it's been slower than usual around these parts. I know I said earlier that Q2 is a somewhat uneventful time of year in comparison. But this is too much of a pendulum swing.

As my uncle used to say, this too shall pass.

I shit you not, I was meaning to quote yesterday’s post and say, “Liked for ‘panoply’”. But I got distracted, and never got back to it.
It feels like every weekend is a cornucopia of rain
I appreciate “a cornucopia of rain”, too.

If it makes you feel any better I had all intentions of being outside yesterday. But the weather never lured me out. So instead I went to CrossFit and read a book. Seems to be a common theme.

I try to tell myself soon the weather will be nice and I won’t be home much…

Soon…

Regarding those Books

Every morning when I drink my glorious cup of coffee, I sit on the couch and read a book. Recently I've migrated from primarily Kindle to reading physical books again. I have to say that I'm enjoying the physical books, much more than the eBook format. The thing about an eBook is that while it's convenient, it's also that device that causes so many attention problems. Putting it down and actually reading a book has been a good change.

As you can see, I have 3 books going currently and I left the earbuds on top to indicate that I'm listening to a 4th book. I often have more than 1 but I will admit that 3 is not usual. The bottom one is a library book that came in so I had to add it. Since I have it for 3 weeks, I need to make sure I read that one first. Pines is almost done, so we'll be back down to 2 in a few days. As you can see I like SciFi and Fantasy. Pines, not exactly sure what to classify that as. The audiobook is Demon Copperhead. If you liked The Goldfinch, you'll like this.

I rode my bike outside today, too. And I watched 5 innings of the Pirates game. I could have called this post, Books, Bikes, and Baseball. TRIPLE B!

The Great Outdoors

We managed to get outside this weekend; not once, not twice, but 3 times. As Robin mentioned last week, it'll come around soon enough. I think it's finally come around. We got in 2 mountain bike rides and a longer road ride. In all it was 4.5+ hours in the saddle, and none of it was spent watching TV.

Friday we kicked off the weekend with a Six Mile ride. With limited daylight we stayed on the Canal side and got in just over an hour. Saturday was a 2+ hour, nearly 35-mile road ride. Today we went to LewMo and did a bit over an hour again. While the allergies are in full gut-punch mode, it was nice to be outside all 3 days. As much as I would love to say I'm done with the inside riding, that's probably optimistic. But the weekend marks the start of the primarily outside season. Count me in.

I didn't take a single picture worth posting on any of the 3 rides, so I'll post the pizza D made after the ride Friday night. It was glorious.

Random Nonsense

You ever get a weirdly strong desire to do something random and totally nonsensical? I've had that urge the past few weeks to do something along those lines. Maybe it's because we don't have any real trips coming up. Or maybe spring does this to me. Either way, I have had thoughts of doing stuff such as...
  • Drive to Phoenix for no apparent reason
  • Bike 200 road miles in a day
  • Camp out in the back yard when it's going to pour overnight. For anyone who's camped, the feeling of being warm & dry in a tent while it rains is an awesome feeling. For those same people, tents are never waterproof, are they?
  • Do a huge Minnewasaka gravel ride
  • Ride that Pittsburgh to DC route, bikepack-ish style ("ish" meaning to camp in a hotel room, probably)
  • Hike the Knife's Edge in Maine
Anyway, I am sure this will pass and since I made this list, I have ridden the MTB 4 times in 7 days so my itch to get out of the house is being scratched. I rode RV earlier in the week, which is crazy enough. But I took the eBike so it was actually fun. Today I hit up Cromwell for the first time this year and it was pretty solid.

Carry on.
