James Pearl Thinks Blogging is Dead

Think of the thermal dynamics of it. Aeropress is a closed container so it will hold the heat in a smaller space for longer. You'll run the risk of it being too hot for too long. The pourover is an immediate drain, so the temps do not stay as high for as long.

That said, the 200 degree kettle helps.

fair point about the enclosed vs open, was not thinking about duration at temperature.

Des Moines, Iowa

An extension of the coffee conversation from yesterday. The premise is this. I have to go on a work trip to Des Moines, Iowa. And for some reason I can take no coffee equipment with me. I leave on a Monday and return on a Friday.

First thing is the flight which leaves EWR at 7 and gets there at 10:20 am. I guess I've found the 1 place that you can't fly direct with United.

Next, I check the best coffee shops by state page that I've saved. This says I should go to Horizon Line Coffee. It's rare this page only has ONE place per state. But Iowa. Google tells me it's open 8am to 3pm on Monday. So I go and get myself a coffee and some beans. I ask them to grind them. I maybe ask Steve where I can get lunch. Assume the beans are $25.

There's a target 15 minutes south of this, which is where we go after we've had a good Iowa lunch. The website tells me there are 4 bodum pourover coffee drippers in aisle B26 at $20 each. It has a screen filter which will do the trick. Assumption is that I'm in a hotel, so I need a kettle. The cheapest they have there is $18. I don't know how to really boil water in a hotel otherwise.

So you're fully equipped for $63 which is a little steep for a business trip, at $9 per cup if you have 7 cups while there. Assuming the same reason you can't bring stuff means you have to leave it, that's too much.

Most likely I end up just getting a coffee from a shop every morning. Given that Horizon opens at 8, I'll need to find something else. Google tells me the Slow Down Coffee Co has pour over and opens at 6:30am. So I more than likely scrap the idea of making my own and just go there each morning and hope it's good.

It's an interesting thought experiment, I guess. But I do wonder why I wasn't allowed to bring any coffee hardware with me on the flight. The above is sort of what I go through when I travel for work. But it's usually coffee shops, bike destinations, and ramen shops. That said, I have no work travel on my calendar currently. And I'm pretty ok with that.

Ok I'll stop with the coffee talk for now. Tomorrow I'll discuss beer so Mitch can get excited again.

I had amazing authentic Vietnamese Pho in Des Moines. While eating it I figured there must be some huge group of Vietnamese people in the state kind of like TX.

I looked it up at the time and I think it was the only Vietnamese restaurant basically in the state.

Iowa is a little weird. A nice way to put it is they seem 10 years behind the rest of the country, and very detached.

Really? We travel with an Aeropress and a humidifier - both carried on. The only thing you can't take is the water.

It was a hypothetical scenario where I was dropped in Bumblefuck, America to see how I would handle the situation.

Beer

I told you today would be about beer.

8 years ago today i stopped drinking. That would be 2922 days ago. I was in Chicago with my daughter for a birthday trip, and I woke up feeling like ass and decided that was enough. She was turning 11 at the time, and I wanted to set a better example for her. I say this of course with the knowledge that she is out with her friends in Columbus right this minute at a bar. But this is college.

I've never really looked back. I don't miss the crappy feeling the day after having a few drinks. Not by a long shot. And of course there's the saved money I can spend on coffee. While I'm not going to say other people should or shouldn't do anything of the sort, it's just not for me anymore. I occasionally have a N/A beer but even those are few & far between. If we're out to eat and they have Athletic on the menu, I may get one. Usually not.

So yeah, April 10th, 2017. I woke up and decided that was it for me. I wanted to be better to myself, and a better self for this kid.

I've never really thought about it in terms of money. At $500/month, that is 48K you've saved. Not to mention, not being hungover for 8 years, that's worth more than 48K to me. I may have to give it a shot!

After my heart surgery I stopped for a bit then stopped completely for 1 year after I had gotten pneumonia for the 2nd time in 3 months. I felt it was easy to stop so that was good I guess. I've started drinking again but I've probably bought maybe 3 packs this year. I may have 4 to 5 a month. Knowing I can stop at anytime is good to know.
Congratulations Norm on 8 years, you're heading in the right direction. Now if you can just stop the caffeine you'll be good.
One addiction for another.

One addiction for another.

Beer was never an addiction or a problem for me. I wasn't drinking every day, never more than 1-2 when I did drink. I stopped because deep down each & every one of us knows that alcohol is a poison. This is like me telling you I stopped dosing mercury as a hobby.

I recommend doing a little research on the health benefits of coffee. My addiction is drinking quality coffee. Put another way, in the case of both beer and coffee, I try to put less garbage in my system on a daily basis.

Speaking of beer. Remember that SSAP when @mattybfat got a keg of double jack? You, Fred, and me drove up in your mini van with the shitty brakes? I was the designated driver for the ride home so I got to experience those shitty brakes first hand. As it turned out, not everyone was on board with those 9% beers after a race so there was plenty of leftovers. I think we were filling our water bottles with it to take home with us. LOL Good times.

I've never been a coffee drinker. Ever. So I don't have that as a go to. I use alcohol to unwind after a stressful week. I'm weak and need it to unwind. I don't over drink so that's a plus.
I didn't know that caffeine was a health benefit? I'll have to check with my coffee Guru, Goz.
Stay sober, Mitch

It can be similar, just as good, but the issue with Aeropress is that it will tend to run a hotter temperature than you probably need. The guy I referred to is James Hoffman, and you can watch an overly long video on the v60 technique. I do not agree with everything he says, or does.

holy crap is that guy nerdy (looking and sounding) certainly a more involved process than the aeropess, with the dripper being $9 i may still give it a go.

He is completely and totally over the top. At least half the shit he says I don't do. I was going to just explain what I do but figured a YT video would be better. My approach is a lot...more simple, let's say.
